Aim for calfskin or cordovan shell and for a Goodyear welt.
Aim for about 450$+ for calfskin and 650$+ for cordovan shell shoes.
With proper care they will last you 10-15+ years.

I've been thinking of buying Church's consul as my first oxford strictly formal shoe.

Anyone can vouch for the quality? I hear mixed opinions after the '99 Prada acquirement of the brand.

The quality is fine if you stick with the classic models and stay away from the more fashion-forward abominations. Another complaint is the prices have gone up post-Prada. Church's Consul is a great shoe. Buy it if you like it.
