Don't think this part is made up. A lot of them were or still are weird looking, tall and lanky, and not wearing designer clothes because they come from modest families, quiet a few of them were athletes and tomboys as well. We have the internet it's not hard at all to find their childhood and school photos, classmates, and friends to verify that they're telling the truth.

But yes they do have to sell their look, as well as a faux level of availability and easy going lifestyle.
