I don't shampoo but do use conditioner. Definitely helps in getting a slick, wavy texture as opposed to dry and straight. I'm growing my hair and it's currently a bit longer than the pic so I don't bother with product and just let it blow in the wind, but I assume a good wax would help it stay up.

You should try the nopoo or low poo and buy a nice leave in to help with the dryness of curly hair.

Also, to reduce frizz, consider using a silk pillowcase and be gentle when drying it out after you wash it.
