I don't think that's true at all. Their tastes are eclectic almost to a fault. Some of the hardcore /mu/ or rateyourmusic types have music collections of tens of thousands of albums.

Of course, it's possible to have a broad taste and still be impressed by the "entry level" music. Knowing about Mongolian snotscore music doesn't preclude you from having a Bowie/Beatles/Radiohead album as your all-time favourite.

The same goes for literature and film too, btw. Plenty of people who are experts in those fields are still in love with the entry level stuff that everyone knows about (Charlie Chaplin, Hitchcock, Shakespeare).
