Hey, since there was an actual discussion in the last one, let's have a nice interior inspo/advice thread. I'm currently re-furnishing my student apartment and I'd like to go for a darker atmosphere. Which plants would you recommend for this? Which ones are low-maintenance?

or walk into your local plant store and ask for something you can grow in a windowless bathroom so the lady doesn't think you are a weirdo that never opens his window during the day

Was thinking of getting a poster of Böcklin's Isle of the dead in black and white. Would this plant match the atmosphere created by that?

Thanks for that, which ones do you think would fit into that aesthetic?

Not really. Böcklins Isle is very melancholic, especially in black/white, whereas that plant has a very tropical vibe to it.

Cacti and succulents are fairly low maintenance, but they greatly benefit from a good deal of sunlight. Jungle cacti will do better in lower light environments.

Outside of that list with all the "impossible to kill" plants, it's kind of trial and error. I have some type of tropical plant that supposedly needs careful watering and lots of light, but I'm terrible with this shit and have failed to even slightly damage it.

sorry I can't post pics atm but any small-ish things I could add? have:
-record player + records
-plant (dracaena draco)
-sofa (black leather)
-coffee table (black wood)
-small persian rug (underneath coffee table)
-standing lamp (somewhat industrial looking, black)

was thinking maybe one more plant, also need to find some cool stuff to put on my wall. maybe someone has somewhere I can order a cool tapestry or something.

I never like any of the posts in these threads. I think what sets me off is the fixation with:

>White or concrete walls
>Large, open spaces, large windows
>Shabby/Industrial elements and random ephemera

I dunno, maybe you guys live in warmer climates, I can see why that might feel refreshing and breathable if you live in SoCal or somesuch.

But I prefer darker walls, well defined spaces, dramatic lighting and comfortable (but still aesthetically simple) furnishings. In the winter I want to feel cozy. In the summer I want to be able to sit in an alcove or sheltered seating, with a view of a garden or courtyard. Traditional Japanese courtyard gardens and Roman villas are major inspirations for me.

Design it yourself and it's free. an architect will gouge you for money and then ask you for more when they overlook a massive problem despite it being their job to ensure there is nothing wrong with the plans. Windows that are cookie cutter windows are very expensive.

Is there any aspect of the pic you like in particular? I can post many more in the same vein of whatever in particular.

I'd also like to make an addendum to my previous post: I should say that I'm not necessarily adverse to large, open interior, however I think they are very difficult to do right. Too often in our society we focus only on the numbers of floorspace and roof height and end up overpaying for very vacuous space. I have 9-foot ceilings (all the buildings in town have them) and it drives me nuts that it makes my furniture look way too short and I have to find large, vertical art to create points of attraction on the wall.

Pic attached is obviously not a home, but is inspiration for what I'd like to see in a modern interpretation of a Roman villa, with a courtyard at center and smaller, simple alcove rooms surrounding.

In my area, getting a place without carpeting is expensive as hell. Which is annoying, because cleaning a carpet is more expensive than cleaning a floor.

I'm literally poor, though, so almost all my furniture has to be scrounged or secondhand. I have a couple things that look cute but it's like a half step above weeaboo cave, and the main room is helpless because I spend so much time cleaning up after my roommate.

You need an art of some kind. A little statue would be really cool, or a framed piece of art. I think tapestries are starting to fade now unless you are a 15 year old girl, which is bad because I have a window covering like that.

I really wanna post my place for advice but it's so much more disorganized than I thought in all the photos! I need to Konmari my ass off first.

I feel like the dark walls and dramatic lighting create claustrophobic spaces, light colored walls and open areas evoke feelings of freedom and a connection to the outside world. Light walls allow for the reflection of natural light and gives the room a sense of breath and life that small dark spaces can not.

You can be comfy in a white room, during the night add some ambience with lights around 3000k to add a glow to the room similar to a natural fire. Japanese houses that include courtyards are known for their connection to the outside, and the fluid transitions from outdoors to indoor spaces. Most houses with shoji are kept open during comfortable weather, effectively blurring the line between "well defined spaces".

Even in colder weather I'd much prefer organic colors to compliment the outside. Brown woods with texture, greys and whites.

no plant will survive with 0 light, thats just a pinterest meme.

some plants will survive in rooms with no natural light, so long as the artificial light you have is of a certain wavelength. it probably isnt, if you use cheap, modern, energy-efficient bulbs or LED.

Why do people still buy bed frames with no storage underneath? You could store those clothes in it.
It looks nice but it seems like a waste of space, either get one with drawers, lift up or empty space underneath.

There's an Australian architect (probably the most famous one lol) named Harry Seidler who worked a lot with cast concrete. I've actually been lucky enough to visit two of his houses, including the one his wife still lives in. The interior walls are so sick. Concrete cast into old timber frames, so the concrete takes on all the knots etc of the timber.
Can't find any decent pics of the interiors online but check if your library has a book about him or something. You'll fizz at the slit

>>12236471
White/light walls help you get away with having less actual light into a space. Your pic works because there's a huge skylight. In many homes, dark walls and furnishings give a claustraphobic and stuffy feeling. Nice example of how to do darkness right though my man.
The key point is actual LIGHT (not just light colours) is the absolute hero of interior design. Literally everything else is auxiliary to having nice light in a space

>>12237737
Cowhide rugs are great. Breaks up a floor organically without having a big block of rectangular rug

Then you have underlying problems in your relationship/personal problems. If everything was fine you would be able to tell her how you feel and she would understand and either work to change or you'd both compromise on a solution that is mutually beneficial.

Tell her you like a clean space, and if she doesn't listen, kick the bitch out.

How do I learn about interior design?

I love a Spanish colonial for the house and interior warm, rustic, comfy with dark woods, deep green plants, surrealist artwork, and big rooms high ceilings, scaunces and steel appliances.

When I purchase a house do I tell an interior designer that or my real estate agent?

I genuinely have no idea

Putting a receptacle for garbage near places where garbage is made seems to help- near the cooking area, near the toilet paper, etc.

How do you get an aesthetically pleasing, clean and effay space when you live with a hoarder???

I'm finishing studies and living with my single mother and she just keeps buying shit, and never throws ANYTHING out, and owns dozens and dozens of ugly fucking plastic storage boxes. None of the rooms in the house have shelves, so there's like three to four bookshelves in a room. It's ridiculous.

I still have shit from when I was a kid my mum refuses to let me throw out. It's depressing... I just want to move out.

I've really thinned my belongings since I moved out, and a lot of my stuff is still home. I try to get rid of some every time I'm home, but if I don't take it to the charity shop/throw it out myself my parents will snipe it.

from books they have no idea on (and neither of them even read), to collections of scrap paper, to CDs I haven't listened to since I was 12 and they certainly never will.

even the garden is a depressing combination of leftover materials for diy projects (seriously, we have a triple-garage sized shed, and my dad arranged a pile of leftover bricks into a lean-to big enough to keep two bicycles inside. the garden is also full of random crap he's found on walks or on dives we went on, fishing weights and lures, old glass bottles. it's really sad, they have a 9 room house way too big for the two of them and every surface is littered with stuff, every room is bursting with stuff. the smallest bedroom is just a walk-in closet for him at this point

it's so depressing. So daunting. Sometimes I look around and think 'how can somebody really think they need any of this? how can somebody live like this?'

What's worse is that once I'm out she's alone. She has cut practically all contact with my father. Her parents are old and also mild hoarders, I'd say. It's horrific. My mum's side of the family are just the most disorganised people.

To make matters worse, she can't even clean. She has always and still always makes me wash her dishes for her, claiming it's 'depressing' seeing all of it piled up. Like no shit.
I always wash and put away anything I've used but she just can't seem to do it herself. She pays a cleaner $50 a fortnight to dust and mop the floor and clean the bathroom cause she doesn't even know where to start. It's misery and I certainly never want to go down her path...
Even in my parents relationship, my dad was always cleaning and cooking...

Last year I lost a shit tonne of weight and grew out of nearly all of my clothes by two sizes, and I got rid of everything. I feel so much more liberated with a compact closet with my favourite pieces. But even then, my mum was so hesitant to get rid of a lot of my clothes. She even said that I 'could grow into them again'...

When she passes away I'll have to sort all her shit. I'd rather incinerate it all because it would be such a fucking task...
Sucks.

that plays on my mind, I'm sure there'd be things I'd want in there and probably lots of photos I'd want to keep but they're overwhelmed by the cases and cases of CDs with photos burned onto them. I worry that I'll get overwhelmed and burn the lot

good job on the weight loss! same here so I now have almost nothing that fits well, so not much variation but it's great I love it. I need to throw away the stuff that doesn't fit but what the fuck am I gonna do if I decide to bulk??
>>
>>12251418
I'd say use it as a good opportunity to buy yourself some nice new clothes. I haven't updated my wardrobe so even the things I've kept that are slightly too big for me I continue to wear until I think I've reached my best capacity to lose weight, and then I'll slowly start treating myself to some nice new clothes.

Just make sure it isn't screenprinted Chinese garbage and you'll be good, though I prefer more esoteric flags like the Moultrie Flag

no. 1000 bucks runs for the shipping included. 10 cubic yards of concrete is a lot of concrete.

Has anyone ordered from this site? Seems like they have flat shipping rates even international (eg 19$ shipping for a chair to the States) which seems off
>>
>>12261823

i was thinking the same, it looks too good to be true
>>
>>12261823
I emailed their support, found this via google translate on their FAQ page:

Do you ship internationally?
Many of our Sellers agree to ship internationally, but due to the nature of certain subjects is not always possible. Due to the varied costs of international shipments, depending on the destination country, the possibility of shipping abroad ask by writing to [email protected] . In the message, a link to the announcement that the inquiry and any information about the country of delivery.

This is incredible apart from the storage under the TV boot being centred. And it needs some art/ books/ little things here and there in my opinion.

How much / where? I'm jealous.
>>

>Why do people hate living in great places? i

Because most people have no taste, no sense of quality, no sense of consistent aesthetic. When I try to explain to my flatmates that they should buy simple, neutral coloured stuff for the kitchen they think I'm an asshole and buy the ugly shit anyway.

Or maybe I'm just biased to one aesthetic

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah the storage under the TV is to hide the cable mess, It's temporary , will probably get some concrete replacement.

Location: Near Amsterdam, Rent is pretty good, around 1,1k / month. It's an old factory converted to loft's. Took some searching to find a place like this. Just don't settle for mediocrity.

Most people don't get that if you want stuff to look good, being consistent in your aesthetic is super important. Like if you have a red teapot on your stove all the time in your all white kitchen, all anyone is going to see is that damn red teapot, so it had better be on fucking purpose.

Skip Gadsden since it's been tainted. Maybe go for an antique flag, pre 50 states. Another fun one is the navy jack, if your colors line up.

I have a Soviet and American flag in my closet behind my clothes, a lil Cold War vibe.

writing on computers sucks in some ways

plus with typewriters you might be forced to re-write when you have to get something online. Rewriting always improves what you've written imo
>>
>>12251173
I would be super stoked if my friend had a setup like this, it's very chill, BUT it still looks a bit like the inside of an Arizonan cafe or something else corporate. I'm not sure what's missing to make it more homey, but atm it looks like the menus are missing.

Maybe a rug would help? You never really see rugs in cafes, right?

Reminds people of Costco. If you've ever been in an eichler or file house you'd see it looks cheap.

Looks badass in pictures though

I put epoxy/bamboo blend wood floors in my house in 2011...And I beat the shit out of them....2 inside house dogs, I ride a road bike bike trainer every day, stem out of shower tile area onto bare bamboo and the look brand new

I actually started doing that until I realised I've only managed to kill a single plant this whole time. I've had to tone down the plant buying, at least until I get a dedicated shelf or something.
