what do you guys think?

go for a vintage equivalent or a poljot with the 3133 movement (although those have doubled in price since they stopped making the movement). I rather like that Junghans, but the size and tryhard nostalgia would annoy me.

>>
>>12219821
Yeah that. It exists in a ~38 mm and a 40+ mm version; and I mean the 38 one of course. I don't think it's automatic though. For vintage auto, your best bet might be vintage seiko bullhead. That OP Junghans is pretty decent though, so don't feel too deterred.

I really like this watch, but about a year after I got my first one the crown fell off. I had it repaired, and today the repaired watch broke again. I feel like now might be an alright time to upgrade.

Does anybody have any good recommendations for watches that look like this that aren't Timex? I just don't want my next watch to break like the last ones did, even if I like the old design.

Actually smart watches are becoming more like smart phones (LTE). It will be a matter of choice (depending on what you're wearing and what you're gonna do outside the house).
I haven't worn a watch since i bought my first phone, but when smart watches get better i might consider getting one.

WITHIN CIVILIZATION, WORN CASUALLY, IT WOULD EQUIVALENT TO USING A NONSMART WATCH; AWAY FROM CIVILIZATION, IT WOULD BE INAPT TO NATURAL CONDITIONS, SINCE IT IS RELATIVELY FRAGILE, AND REQUIRES CONSTANT CHARGING, AND A MECHANICAL FIELD WATCH WOULD BE APTEST, THEREFORE, A SMARTWATCH SEEMS LIKE YET ANOTHER SUPERFLUOUS ELECTRONIC CONSUMER PRODUCT.

Just got the black one, will post pics when it arrives. I've had a look at a lot of quartz timexes, seikos and even the Raketa with moonphase on eBay but never saw one with a design I actually like.
This one is made in Germany by a company with history and uses a Swiss Ronda moonphase quartz movement which seems to be trouble. It was just 60€ in the end. That big moon window and the obviously Bathys inspired look of the black one really made me pull the trigger.

because the 809 has no handwind option at all.
I have the 805 and I can't stand shaking the watch like a retard everyday after getting up. handwind would be better.

or do the smart and reasonable thing: just buy quartz and never look back. automatic advantages aside, it's still inefficient if I need to care about winding it or buy a watch winder.

You get a non hackable, but handwindable automatic movement that stays within +1m/-1m in 24 hour.

QC and durability will be terrible. Has two 24 hour subdials, one a day/night masquerading as a fake moonphase, and another masquerading as a fake GMT. Has an open heart balance wheel with a fake balance bridge masquerading as a tourbillon. These watches are usually (though not always) huge. +/-60s/d is very poor and to be honest I wouldn't even count on it maintaining that. The ones that are gold-colored have a finish that will start to wear away very quickly. Few watchmakers will agree to work on them.

All that said, they're $30, so if you decide you want one, go for it.

>Complications that take ages to set up and rely on your watch being constantly running like moon faces and solar time

Aren't these going to be shit? I reset my mechanical watches before I put them on because they mechanical watches always lose or gain seconds over 24 hours.

If you can't quickly reset your watch in the morning before you put it on. How will it be accurate?
>>
>>12228799
The problem with super cheap chinese shit is... its super cheap. Stamped parts, the very barest of plating for the gold color, if it works for 2 days the factory calls it good. If you like it then whatever, everyone else's opinions are invalid.

AM/PM dial isn't for me, and I don't really understand the other 2 dials/complications on the face. Also, the off-center minute/hour hands is triggering my tism. You can see where parts of the face and even the hands were stamped and they're not completely flat in the first pic. But again, for $30 I don't expect perfection out of any watch. For $30 I think you could do better unless you want the faux-luxury look. Even then, I think you could still do better.
>>
>>12229005
You can buy a a mechanical watch winder to place your watch in while you sleep to keep the time up.
>>
>>12226500
> it turns out its worth 500 to my suprise!!

Sorry but disappoint you, but it's not worth even remotely that. If you tried to sell it, realistically you'd propably get $80 bucks out of it.

If it has been recently serviced (my guess it's not judging by the cosmetic condition), 140$ if lucky.

Still a good buy for 20$, that's true.
>>
>>12229091
That's not the issue, the issue is that mechanical watches can't be relied to keep correct time over a long period Heck even a quartz watch will lose a few seconds over a week.

Now this isn't a problem if you have a simple automatic watch. Just quickly sync it to an atomic clock when you put it on in the morning.

But some of these complicated complications require a long time to set and sync
>>
>>12228628
>as anyone else ever bought one of these $30 chink watches?

The catch is that it looks exactly like a 30$ chink watch?
>>
>>12229085
>I don't really understand the other 2 dials/complications on the face

What's to get? One is a 24 dial and the other has a little sun and moon that rotates around for when it's day and night.
>>
>>12228799
>>12228628
For a chink watch everything on this seems to work and actually make sense.

I've seen chink watches with Tachymeter dials that don't even have a second hand.
>>
>>12229134
If you have a perpetual calendar that loses a minute a week, just once a week move the minute hand forward one minute. You don't need to reset the moonphase or the tidal calculator; they're all advanced when you move the minute hand forward. The only time complications are a real problem is if the watch has been stopped for a long time. If your watch has been stopped for two months in the safe, just setting with the minute hand will work, but you'd have to turn it all the way around the face 87,840 times, so most watches have a more complicated set of pushers to quickset the complications. But if your concern is just the time drift, you don't need to reset the complications independently.
>>
>>12229005

Do you know anything about horology? Good moon phases have to be reset once every 10 years.

What? I mean I suppose it depends on what you mean by "have to reset", but moonphases are typically measured by how long it takes for a 1 day correction to be needed, and a standard moonphase is either 2.5 years or 122.5 years

I can't tell if you got the joke, but that's the Max Bill chronoscope, the best I can think of as a "good watch for a bill"
>>
>>12228614
I think I made it pretty clear why I need to shake it in the first place. that's even what the instructions say.

I do own quartz watches and prefer them mostly too.

>>12228692
no handwind feature is the reason why the SNK80X is cheaper and the Orient one isn't.

it might be just you, their motto is some nonsense about how they last forever but both of mine are ded
I'll probably just suck it up and buy another one that doesn't have as many problems though
>>
>>12230016
A bill means 100 bucks dweebs
>>
>>12230033
The newer ones might be made on older manufacture, but mine tickes exactly 0.5 seconds off. It ticks between each second marker, but ther slogan is takes a lickin' keeps on ticking. Its supposed to last forever, but lately their QC seems to be shit and not that great. Only time will tell if their newer stuff is as worthwhile as their older manufacture.
>>
>>12230033
The only reason the one I had from lord even knows how many years ago died is cause a boat fell on it, amongst other countless beatings
>>
>>12230165
Also, I bought a timex expecting a cheap watch for $30 to last forever. But after seeing it 0.5 second off each tick, i can't bring myself to buy another watch, even if it means never having indiglo again. its so off-putting having a watch having a minor flaw (half a second off) that i don't even want to buy another.

Although I'm sure others are perfect on the second hand.

I have an expedition
>my least worn watch, but still gets out at least once a week
>I wear it whenever I'm doing an activity that may damage a watch, as it's the one I care the least about
>Just over two years now, absolutely no problems.
I hate that the second hand doesn't line up with the lines on the watch, but that's my only complaint. Never had a problem with the crown.
>>
>>12230175
You can look at Caio's TOUGH MOVEMENT watches, that supposedly help solve the problem of missing indices.
>>
>>12230249
Casio is a different company; the have different movements altogether. I have a Casio and its reasonably good for the price I paid. It doesn't have indiglo but its good looking and doesn't tick like Achmed's box.
>>
>>12230165
>>12230175
>but mine tickes exactly 0.5 seconds off

You mean it ticks between markers? It's pretty common in even higher end quartz watches, but few consider it as a problem since it doesn't effect accuracy or use in anyway.

I won this 1980s seiko on ebay for $16.

It looks nice but it came with a strap that looks weird with it. The strap is dark brown.

What kind of strap should I put on it so it looks better?

Yeah, it ticks between the markers. Compared to my other watches it keeps time just as well as them; it just bothers me that the hands go between the markers.

What does /fa/ think of my orient? I think it has a very clean and crisp design and the dial is nicely textured, which sadly doesn't show on my crappy pic. The finishing and quality is also up to orients unusually high standard. I made the strap myself. The bracelet that this came with is also pretty good, except for the hollow end links. Orient should really up their bracelet game.

To be honest with you, the only correct answer is to take it to a watchmaker (a real watchmaker, not someone in a mall that replaces batteries) and ask them to do it. It will not be cheap.

43mm is kind of big and the lack of contrast on the hands may make legibility difficult, especially the hour hand. The ETA2824/SW200 is a good movement, but its balance wheel and crown are not exactly 90 degrees apart, so the balance wheel is not dead center (I have a Baume & Mercier with the same issue). This may not bother you, but the wheel is slightly to the right of center, and is noticeable in person. $500 is a reasonable price for a basic ETA2824/SW200 watch, if you care about Swiss Made and you like the aesthetic. Also consider Orient or Orient Star, which have excellent in-house movements and some similar open-heart aesthetics.

Wood is under utilized as a watch material imo

scratches easy, forces watches to be bigger, not very water resistant, and there aren't any woods there that will flaunt wealth as well as precious metals.

Aesthetics are very subjective; I personally don't think its a nice tough and doesn't add to any watch other than the gold "I spent $20,000 on this" watches.

However I like boring, minimalistic watches. Without the moonphase, that would be a great watch. Less is more, for me.

The moon phase is the only reason why I bought this watch, otherwise I wouldn't ever want to be caught dead wearing a quartz shitter.
I've been looking for an affordable moon phase watch for quite a long time and I am happy to have found this one since the moon phase wheel is big and is well integrated in the design which is something unusual to see since most models out there have little ones and white dials. I also liked the fact it's from a brand like East German Ruhla which has an interesting history behind, definitely not a fashion watch.
Moon phases are not necessary but as someone interested in astronomy I really find it charming.
>>12234317
Moon phase is one of the few complications that really justify a quartz movement. Mechanicals with moon phase are technically amazing but unpractical because you really have to make sure to wind them up/ wear them daily or you will have to set up the phase everytime you are gonna wear it

>>
>>12234360
>>12234405
Most people who want a moon phase on a mechanical watch want it because it is an expensive complication to have. Which, I find sort of repulsive but understandable. If there's an actual need for it, I have no problems, and in such a case quartz is actually preferred in my opinion. In reality, a moon phase is a completely useless feature for most people, that is why I asked.
>>
>>12234317
Again, what's wrong with quartz already?
>>
>>12234541
Damn, what year cracker jack box do these come out of?
>>
>>12234968
Nothing is wrong with quartz. Purists like to think an automatic, no electronics keeping time is the way to go. It certainly takes a lot more craftsmanship expertise to make them that way.

A quarts is much less mechanical and relies on a battery.

Adding machines and cash registers used to be completely mechanical, now you can buy a calculator for $1 and it will work much better and faster.
>>
>>12234968

Nothing. It's just silly to add a complication like moon phase to a cheap ass watch.
>>
>>12234976
In soviet Russia cracker boxes came out of these watches.
