the paint splatter is originally the by-product of actual painters, who just happen to get color splashes onto their shoe tips while doing their art.
For me, the paint splatter falls into the same category as predistressed denim, i.e. play-pretend to live a more interesting and creative life-style than your actual life.

Maybe the paint-splatter thing then went on to take a life on it's own, idk.
