it's an artificially blown up market imo, often times on borrowed fame from celebs who're being payed for wearing certain models in public to push credibility.
Started on actual athletes like tennis and basketball players, later on musicians, singers and actors and nowadays just on any kind of celeb. Companies pay them to promote their sneakers, and people buying them to become more like their idols.
I for my part find it hard to work athletic shoes into non-athletic outfits, but that might be just me.
