Bowie is dressed as the Thin White Duke which was a persona and character of his. It's loosely based on a former character he played in the film The Man Who Fell To Earth.

Also, what is your height and weight? He wasn't eating anything in those years due to gargantuan amounts of cocaine. At times he was dangerously underweight. Every outfit he wore had to take that into account. If you're not super skinny then it will look even more absurd.
