if it's an actual thing that requires a button down go for them (unless it's too formal), i think they look great

Basic reasoning: dress pants and suit pangs hang from about belly button height.
Jeans, chinos, and casual trousers cling at hip height. They fit so closely at the hips that there's no point in "suspending" them.
It would be like hanging a poster on a wall when it's already tacked to the wall.
