The most classic thing is to use a white handkerchief no matter what, ideally linen. You can get away with this practically in all cases so if you don't want to be all arcane about it, just stick to that. (You can even get these fake squares where there's e.g. a perfect cloth trifold attached to a piece of cardboard which are good for if you just want to look presentable and not fuck around, it's a bit cheaty but tbqh I think it's well within the bounds of acceptability, not tacky or anything.)

If you want to get more into it, it goes like this.
Level 1: Contrasting with the jacket. This is the most basic and also the most crucial, it's the only one you absolutely have to do. If you wear a handkerchief that blends in with the suit color it looks like shit, you want it to break off and be visible or you're just wasting your time, since no square at all would give a cleaner look.

Level 2: Matching the shirt. Since the same contrast thing applies to shirts as in level 1 above, they rarely ever clash, making this easy. The shirt and pochette should match in color but NOT in pattern -- ideally one at most will be patterned, while the other is a plain color matching the essential tone of the first. (Your own pic illustrates this level)

Level 3: Matching the waistcoat -- this applies only if you're wearing an odd waistcoat, unusual nowadays. However if you do wear one this looks good. Same pattern/hue thing as above.

Level 4: Using patterns whose colors subtly match, contrast and bring out the colors of various parts of your fit -- high level and can get some very good effects but this is where you basically become a pochette *nerd* which is frankly to really fucking overdo a single detail of suiting which most people just omit. Unless you have instinctive and excellent grasp of color, avoid getting this bogged down.

If I don't wear a tie I match it with my shirt, which is most of the time white.
