It's not a bad goal to strive for, the real problem is the way they go about it. Anorexia is not healthy, bulimia is not healthy. Exercise and a healthy diet is. Though it really does come down to genetics in many models cases

Advertising. Advertising agencies don't have goal of giving women horrible complexes. They just want to give their product glamour appeal. C'est la vie. More complex than that but it is in part affect of unintended consequence. You shouldn't worry about it that much because as far as things go it doesn't really matter.
