Move aside for the GOAT. Not sure if it's 'effay,' there might be too much rugged masculinity (and homoeroticism) but Ishmael fits the /fa/ stereotype very well I believe.

Have any of you actually read this stuff? How could you recommend "the republic" for casual reading? Reading as devolved into a pissing contest, where everyone wants to show off their learned sensibilities in literature. Read what you enjoy, enjoy what you read. Not to say that "the republic" is hard to digest, it's just that reading tongue-in-cheek dialogue about the tenets of an ideal republic according to a man who lived centuries before Christ, enriches no one.

YOU DIDN'T STRIKE A CHORD, MY CAPS LOCK KEY IS JUST BROKEN

LOOK, THE THING IS THAT THERE ARE ASPECTS OF THE BOOK I DISAGREE WITH FOR CERTAIN, LIKE THE ASSERTIONS ABOUT MORALITY STEMMING FROM FALSE AXIOMS, AND THE SUPPRESSION OF THE CITIZEN'S RIGHT TO VARIOUS KINDS OF SPEECH, TRADE, AND ART

HOWEVER THE MODEL OF THE COMMON MAN, THE SUB-RULER, AND THE KING IS WITHOUT A DOUBT THE BEST HIERARCHICAL MODEL DEVISED BY MAN, ASSUMING ALL INVOLVED ARE HOLDING THE INTERESTS AND LAWS OF THE STATE THEY WERE ELECTED TO PROTECT CLOSEST TO THEIR HEARTS AND ACTIONS

THE POPULACE SHOULD NOT RULE, AS THIS LEADS TO MOB INJUSTICE. THE KING SHOULD NOT RULE, AS THIS LEADS TO TYRANNY AND OPPRESSION. THE LAW SHOULD RULE, AND SHOULD BE UPHELD BY A HIERARCHY OF THOSE SUITED TO HOLD THE DECISIONS OF THE TIER BELOW THEM UP TO SCRUTINY.

SOCIETY CAN NOT FUNCTION WITHOUT HIERARCHY, AND PURE DEMOCRACY WILL ALWAYS DEVOLVE INTO DISASTER, NO MATTER WHAT.

LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC

>>11881713
One can't just assert that the hierarchical system described will work "if they hold interests..closest to their hearts." This simply isn't how human society functions! It's totally naive and ahistorical. A simple study of actually existing societies shows that when power is concentrated in a few hands, it is used and abused for the benefit of that ruling class. Plato constructs a fantasy society based on this fundamentally flawed premise, and his conclusions thereafter are invalid.

Furthermore, you cannot remove law from the society that constructs it. It is not an exalted upper tier of reason removed from lesser thought or petty squabbling. Law is the direct product of the balance of power in a society. To place complete faith in the law is to accept society as it is at the moment. It says nothing of how things should be, and tells us only where the balance of power between classes currently stands.

>>
>>11882008
THIS IS BECAUSE NO SOCIETY IS REALLY CARRYING OUT PLATO'S VISION. JUST LOOK AT AMERICA, A COUNTRY FOUNDED ON GREEK PRINCIPLES AND MAJORLY, PLATO'S IDEAS

THE LAW MAKING PROCESS WAS INTENTIONALLY SCRAMBLED AND COMPLICATED BY THE FOUNDING FATHERS TO PREVENT RAPID CHANGING OF LAWS DEPENDING ON SHIFTS IN LEADERS, BUT IT HAS BACK FIRED AND LEFT THE CHAIN OF SCRUTINY TOO BROKEN AND SCATTERED TO ACTUALLY WORK. PROPER GOVERNMENT REGULATION AGAINST CORRUPTION AND INCOMPETENCE HAS BEEN RENDERED NEAR-IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE SMALL CHINKS IN THE ARMOR WAS FOUND, AND MONEY POURED IN THROUGH THOSE CHINKS SO DILUTE THE SYSTEM WITH BRIBERY AND PERPETUAL PENIS
>>
>>11882336
I DON'T KNOW WHY IT SAYS "PENIS" AT THE END, I DIDN'T WRITE THAT
>>
>>11880628
I really enjoy Murakami's work, but this (and Colorless) were truly awful. I finished both books wondering what was the point of him ever writing them in the first place.

(TBF, they were translations, so maybe the quality was lost in the process.)

Tell me, do you fags read books to develop taste in literature and genuinely enjoy it? Or do you do it so that it's an accessory to your profile and people perceive you in a way that you want.
>>
>>11882326
When it is based on faulty premises it certainly is. There is a difference between a thought experiment based on logical precepts and one that rests upon a fallacy. I do not object to fantasy, but if we are to act as if there is truth in the writing there must be a factual basis underneath. In The Republic, that basis is sorely lacking.

>>11882336
It's a basic law of human behavior that those in power act to perpetuate their power. I certainly hope you don't believe that having a less accountable and more centralized government would reduce corruption and incompetence. That simply doesn't follow. Without democratic processes governments become utterly self serving and put their wants above the needs of the people.

I read because I enjoy it. I won't always suffer through something when I find it awful, but if it was recommended to me by someone who I feel has good taste, I'll try to motor through regardless and then discuss my opinion with them later.

I'm sure people perceive me as a more avid reader than I am due to the number of books I own. I have a huge pile of books I took from my family home when it was being sold and my Mom moved into a condo and simply didn't have the space for it. I'm hoping to get through it all one day.
