Why wouldn't he have read the books? It really doesn't take that long to read one book (especially if it's an illustrated one) if you just organise your time right. People like him or Hans Ulrich Obrist have insane libraries because they know that to work on the level they do, one has to be well rounded with knowledge.

I also forgot to mention that he mentioned in one interview that "he speaks all languages". I assume he was referring to European languages, because unfortunately Karl is a huge bigot, which is why I can't really respect the guy even if he is very accomplished.
