I love flannel, and it's a staple in my non-work outfit during the fall and winter. Admittedly, since it's usually paired with black skinny jeans, it's essentially the male basic bitch uniform.

Just go for darker tones and more mild patterns. Bright flannel (like the blue/black/white checkered one) is heinous.

Vermont Flannel is great. Their flannel is hearty, comfortable, and warm. The only downsides that I can think of are (1) they only have a few good patterns (I wouldn't imagine getting more than 2-3 VFs anyway), and (2) their sizes are a little funky and don't translate well to other brands (I think that they run large).
