Well, they weren't. When I was in middle school ca. 1991, they played the "Thriller" video on Halloween, and we laughed at it because of how dated it was. Nobody in middle/high school/college thought any of those people were cool at the time, and basically only people on TV were still dressing that way into the 90s.
