This is sort of speculation, but I think it's definitely linked to the whole Joy Division revival of the 2000s

There were those films about JD and the manchester theme, not to mention "Love Will Tear Us Apart" getting stuck into many indie films of the era. This associated them with millennial "alternative" culture and it snowballed with tumblr and so on.
