Am i the only one that think the speedmaster looks kind of... cheap? I mean it's a cool design and history and all and i'd love to have one, but the case shape and especially the metal bezel is just not quite right. Can't quite put my finger on it.
What about white dials?
>>11487007
Got the silver one. Should I get that one aswell?
>>11487802
Do you want a gold watch?
If so, yes.
Otherwise, no.
I'm personally not a huge fan, but we can't decide for you. They're pretty cheap so it's not a huge purchase.
>>11487807
Yeah I mean, the silver one has a nice bracelet, looks like steel, but the panel itself looks cheap. Is the gold one the same?
>>11487800
white dials look great but being pasty myself I find them a bit hard to get used to.
then again, black dials never look interesting all that much.
>>11487790
>Can't quite put my finger on it.
the look like swatch irony chronos, basically. that's what it probably is. the domed crystal looks plasticky although it's not.
>>11487790
I can't agree with you. I really like the case shape. It also looks better in person than on pictures.
But maybe this will be more to your liking?
Kinda pointless posting this, since I have a completely different watch face, But the bracelet and shape are nice IMO

Is that your watch..? I saw in at the department store as I was walking through the other day, one of the largest watches I've seen.
I've been excited to wear my perpetual calendar Citizen the past couple weeks since winning the bid on eBay. This is by far one of the best watches I've ever had, imo better than a lot of my Swiss watches.
When it stores energy for 6 months, runs perfectly, and only loses half a second per week, I can't help but admire the Perpetual calendars by Citizen, and the Eco-Drive in general.

How are you liking that Timex?
I never really thought about Timex before, but recently I saw I style I liked, and they range from $40-90. It would probably be my casual, beater, or around the house watch. But they have some attractive styles, and after feeling some Timex's in the store, they seem to be consistent and good quality for the money. But as someone that has one, how are you enjoying that in general? Are the chrono's working correctly? How is the material and durability?
FYI it was the Timex Waterbury orange accent that I am talking about.

I absolutely despise the people that will internally compare their Omega or Breitling to someones Citizen or Seiko. It makes me laugh, but then again, those are the people whose main interest in getting a watch is status. I figure those people know little about watches, or at least the purpose and functionality of watches. I know plenty of watch enthusiasts that will wear their $50 watches around, and leave their $10,000 Constantin at home. There is alot of pseudo-watch experts here, I don't really know many people that would feel 'poor' or embarrassed for wearing a Citizen, or even a $80 Seiko around.
>buy dead Casio databank off ebay in mint condition
>put battery in and it just keeps making a whining noise so I have to return it and am currently going through charge back problems with seller
>find another super rare old Databank on auction
>forgot about it last night and slept through the auction
>sold for way cheaper then I was willing to bid

Is that an insult? It felt like an insult. I chose it as a gift when I was younger and stupidly thought it would look "cool". Now it's been lying around for years. I feel like the transparent plastic casing puts it into "beyond salvageable" territory, especially because it clashes with other straps I could otherwise replace the original one with.
But then when I actually wear it, it doesn't look as horrendously offensive as I thought it would, so I dunno. Just wanted to see some reactions.

There are lots of divers out there, the steinhart is ok but too much of a copy of a classic sub..
Maybe a squale? I'm not personally a fan but lots of people like them.
The great thing about the pelagos is that it's essentially a modern remake of the submariner, and since both are part of the rolex brand and family and there are enough differences (snowflake hands, titanium, 3d dial) it works pretty well.
It's still a bit overpriced for what it is (especially the old version pictured with an ETA) but it's a nice watch. Get the new version (the blue is sexy) with the inhouse movement if you can stand the 5 lines of text on the dial.
Recently got this.

>don't like the idea of people combining tech with their timepieces
first off if they looked nice enough I would maybe consider one, but I've already stated this viewpoint.
secondly, yes. it is nice knowing the piece around your wrist is an actual manual ticking son of a bitch that uses extremely precise and complicated mechanisms to synchronise spinning gears and whatnot to ensure the face shows spinning hands at the right pace, for the sake of being able to tell the time.
I think if you understood the incredible amount of time it took to design such pieces, you might feel like it is nicer than 'requiring' another piece of tech, which honestly, we don't:

Daytona is the most well known, but it's also 20 grand so the one you see very little of in real life.
Personally I think that gold is a bit arab when it comes to watches unless used incredibly sparingly. a Rolex like the one pictured is always a nice piece that goes with everything and doesn't make you look like a flashy asshole (though Rolex, as nice a watch as they make, could make the most understated thing in the world and some asshole will still call you flashy)
Here are some recommendation, of varying price
If you must have a swiss automatic watch:
>Rolex Oyster/oysterdate
>Rolex Cellini
>Omega Seamaster 10XX series
>Breitling Transocean
not swiss but also high end
>IWC Potofino
>IWC Portogieser
If you're primarily focused on design and not brand name then here are some lower end watches. Functionally they are identical (if not better when it comes to quartz) to the higher end models and you will not notice a difference in quality, they're also fairly respectable since most people don't care about watches and if they see you wearing a 1k watch they will be impressed enough. There's a big variance in price in this section (100-2000)
>Anything from Nomos
>Junghans Max Bill Automatic (or quartz if you want something more budget friendly)
>Instrumnt 01C
>Braun have a very nice collection
>Tic15 (very interesting design)
>A variety of Longines
>a variety of Seiko

Decent recommendations apart from Longines. A new longines is (with a few exceptions) one of the worst purchases you can make.
>>11500818
Why is that?
functionally, a Longines is identical to any other watch, in terms of impressing those around you, most people know Longines as a luxury maker of pricey watches.
I agree personally that I would never buy a Longines but the design is passable and the other functions are covered.

>>11503922
Hublots are definitely giant pieces of shit in the mechanical watch world.
As the one poster said, the majority of their watches use an ETA or modified ETA 7750. A good ETA watch movement used in ALOT of cheaper watches.
I mean even if the materials used are that good, they have a huge profits margin compared to the type of movement they are using in their ultra 'Luxury' watches. I feel bad for the people that paid over 10K for a Hublot with an ETA 7750. Given you can find a watch with the same movement for around $500, like certain Bulova Accutrons, and some Hamiltons. It's a ridiculous mark up, and Hublot should be ashamed for marketing watches with movements that don't reflect the quality or craftsmanship that you would expect to see on that large of a price tag. I mean hell, Tag Heuers, Breitlings, Hamiltons, and even Bulova all use the same movement and sell for less than 25% of the cost of one of those Hublots.
All of that extra money, thousands of dollars, you are simply paying for the name, and maybe the design if you like it that much. So you can have fun paying your extra 8 grand for a watch that says Hublot on it and is made out of materials that cost them an extra $15 in production. And from my understanding, to some people, they have a nice look, not to me at least, but their movement and quality does not impress many watch collectors or experts at all, there is a particular disdain for them, and quite frankly, understandably so.
But it isn't my place to judge, if anyone likes the name or looks of a Hublot, they should get it if they are willing to fork out all that money.

a few Hublots look nice
>>11503666
I thought of Archer when I saw this for whatever reason... Cool though. I don't know if I'd rock it, but it's different.
>>11504435
Yeah, Hublot is great.

sth = something, in case you were still wondering

First watch, had it for years and it's still going strong. Would be nice to upgrade if I wasn't broke tho
The Quartz has been with me since the 6th grade and has changed bands three times
The Casio was a bachelor's graduation present this year
thinking of making this my next watch
opinions?
I only have small wrists so most bulky watches really don't suit me
>>11504538
What model is that?
>>11492574
>>11492644
Can you actually change the strap for a Nato one on the g shock?
Opinion? Going to cop for daily use.

>>11505686
cop. that's a great watch.
>>11506738
the rule of thumb is that you should avoid brands that are not watch manufacturers first and foremost.
I was surprised, how comfy that silicone band is.
>>11507041
I think silicone is unironically the best watch strap material there is.
if it's silicone, it doesn't affect your health either and you can put it in water no problem and is pretty heat resistant too. it doesn't wear out like leather so you don't need to replace it and is light weight unlike metal bracelets.
what do ya think of this bad boy
>>11507070
cant decide
>>11488094
who gives a shit what wrist you wear it on
>>11507070
>>11507071
Don't like either, that seconds hand is disgusting.
Best watches from Vostok?
>>11507125
Amphibias. They are all the same, just get the case and dial you prefer.
>>11507118
just want an all-black one. dont really care about the cronograph
this one is nifty
>>11507135
>Amphibia
>Not Neptune
AGH, SUCH...SHIT...TASTE
My little kommandirskie, nothing special but i like it
>>11506819
This is a misnomer
Watches from non watch manufacturers are perfectly fine and function just as well.
The real thing to do is avoid fashion brands like Fossil and bad design
>>11507291
I like the neptune too...
>>11504541
You got a Casio as a grad present?
I try not to be snooty and douchey, and Casio make a great watch for a great price, but c'mon man, you deserve better
Buy yourself something you really want, you earned it
>>11507345
Good thing we're all fucking rich from rich families, right?
>>11487973
Just some info a out the crystal: On the original speedmaster (so, not the sappire version) the domed glass is actually Hesalite, a kind of plexiglass. This was a logical choice in the end of the 50s. And it's very shock resistant. People still buy this version to stay as close to the original as possible. But there is, as I already said a sappire version available. It does look a bit like plastic, but that's why!

>>11507359
my family is a little down on it's luck right now I don't resent getting a Casio
I did tell them that I didn't want anything expensive as a present
plus I'm going into a masters degree now, hope I don't get another watch (or at least another Casio) for when I finish that

Personally I love Bulova, they use Miyota Movements, and have a good reputation as a watch making company since the late 1800's in America. But people will complain about it, about the build quality, or they just don't like the looks of some. But all of my Bulovas have been great quality, still there with Citizen and Seiko, sometimes better imho.
Also check out the Bulova Accutrons, they are fantastic watches for the money, and the precisionists are fantastic too, with a 16bps moving second hand, it is smoother than any mechanical watch and rolexs etc, out there. Bulova has some great engineering, including the Tuning fork and the movement of the precisionists.
In that watch, you are probably getting a standard Miyota quartz movement. If you like the design, get it. I saw that in person when the dept. store near me had a huge sale on, your picture doesn't do the dial justice, it has a great look, but just be aware, I think the dial is a lot smaller than you think.
I copped my bulova precisionist two days ago on kijiji for $65, put a leather strap on, got a pretty good deal.
My dad found this one on the ground at his job and gave it to me. I still need to adjust it, but I'll start wearing it soon.
>>11507345
That Casio is a titanium, special edition watch, easily costs a couple hundred. A whole lot more expensive than the casio's you're probably imagining.
>>11507496
from what I can find with what's on the watch (Lineage Titanium Lin-163) it seems to be somewhere between 50-100€
>>11507525
Maybe where you are, I'm not European, so in the US, I see it new on Amazon for about 200-250. But ebay looks like more than half the price, so you may be right.
>>11507496
>>11507525
>>11507595
I keep finding it for around £45,reduced from RRP of £60
>>11507440
That's no problem, everyone should be happy with a present
but you should use your savings and reward your hard work. Not being able to enjoy the fruits of your own labour is the worst thing in the world
>>11507842
I'm gonna see if the fruits of my labor are worth rewarding if I can get a job before school starts again in September
>>11507829
Still higher than most Casios
>>11507055
It just looks the sportiest, which isn't exactly fashionable imo
>>11500348

Hand me down from my late great uncle, old Omega from the late 30's, still works perfectly after I wind it up every morning. Had a few people price check it but nothing consistant enough and I would never sell it anyway.
>>11509168
I wouldn't wear but that's a nice piece. How long does a full wind last?
>>11509182
About a day, usually do it every morning around 9, and yeah to be honest I wear it more for sentimental value as the face is rather small, my great uncle was a soilder and sailor. Obviously fashion didn't really have much time to work it's way in there.
>>11507311
That's not what misnomer means.
Also, pls help /fa/. I'm just getting into watches and I really want a watch with a kanji day wheel, but it seems they're very uncommon. Have any tips for finding one? This Seiko I found on AmazonJP is the only one I've seen that has one stock.
thoughts? got it as a present few months ago
>>11509598
Ebay
>>11490436
i love it.
>>11492703
where did you get this?
>>11511764
He got it from either eBay, or the Parnis website.
They are decent Chinese watches that have solid builds, and Sea-Gull mechanical movements.
Sea-Gull has legitimately good movements for a Chinese brand, they are not the Nation Standard Chinese movements that a lot of the cheaper ones use, and just like any other brand, the quality of the Sea-gull movement varies, just like how Miyota movements can vary in quality. But generally, you hear good things about them, you can customize any of their watches to use Sapphire too. I just won an eBay auction last night, I got mine for $55usd, I guess I got lucky as it retails for over $120 usd on the actual Parnis sites, and most Parnis' sell around $100 on eBay via Buy it now.
Aside from that, they have a lot of good designs, and value for the money. Don't go in there expecting a certified ETA movement, but they are great for Chinese watches/movements.
What does /fa/ think of skagen as a brand?
Is it durable? I am a poorfag and I want a nice minimalist slim watch...
>>11512538
They're basic watches with basic Miyota movements. They aren't bad movements, but they are movements they put in watches that cost half the price. If you like the design, go for it, I've heard a bunch of people say they are durable, and I've heard a couple complain. IMO they're better than the MVMT and Daniel Wellingtons watches of the world. Give it a try, they seem like solid watches when I checked them out, some nice designs too.
Dirt cheap. Worth copping?
>>11499684
>tfw
it's a solid watch, i'd say cop
>>11509598
Most watches have the day display in a variety of languages
>>11512753
Yeah, the problem I'm having is that they typically have 2, and I don't see an easy way to tell which two. It looks like most of the Seikos for some reason have English and Spanish. Even the JDM models. Maybe I'll just stick to an all purpose watch for now and buy one when I get the chance to travel.
>>11487800
I love the sarb035, but it looks too big on your hand. Is it?
>>11488018
