You're just projecting your insecurities.

A lot of people who do wear obscure band shirts want other people to know of the band's existence. For indies bands fans are an important part of their promotion. They aren't on the radio or used in adds, they aren't famous. A fan wearing their shirt is literally a walking advertisement, but instead of looking forward to discovering new music you're intimidated by it. How pathetic.
