black jeans work from a color perspective but don't give the same vibrant nostalgia, indigo jeans connect more to that time and fits in better because of the connotations that shirt has to that cultural time (mostlly because of the pattern the shirt has.
You saw a lot of people with bootcut indigo back then (but she shouldnt wear bootcut because that looks shit), and the same people who wore those types of shirts didn't wear black denim to the same extent as indigo
