It really is that simple, it's a business tactic, if you dislike it, ignore it! Your opinion on whether it is appropriate is irrelevent.

I think part of the reason this stuff is such a big deal today is that social media makes want (need?) to share their opinions. In the past people complained to their significant other and friends but it never made it's way to us (well, most of the time). So I don't know if theres more outrage, but it's certainly louder.
