Tufts alum here (sorta cool old school I guess). UCLA is widely respected, and kids who take the initiative to get into serious academic work with the faculty do some cool stuff. Very few people at Tufts, Harvard or MIT (they're all within a couple miles of each other) dress well, so if it's about the prep clothes then you aren't missing much.

Anyway, if you can get a top job or grad school then where you went to undergrad will matter less than you think. UCLA won't keep you from that.

Are turtlenecks prep?

I know they were sometimes layered with, but I feel as if that was deliberately ironic. Instead of being all early '60s anti-tie minimalist, this guy is mocking it by being what you could call maximalist.

In short, are they prep as a solo layer, maybe with a sportcoat thrown on top?
>>
>>11196101
>>11196019
When I was at UCLA there was some oriental fellow who was wearing sockless loafers with navy shorts and white OCBD, and some of the frat bros with better dress sense too. The majority there are rubbish of the first degree but there are many Sino-Koreans wearing expensive streetwear and quite a few white and yellow fellows with a more preppy look. The more north you on campus, go the better dressed people get and the lower their future incomes become.

In terms of Japanese Ivy, westcoast unis including UCLA became more popular during the 70's when traddies incorporated more sporty items and nicer elements of surfer fashion, and items from the UCLA co-op were coveted by VAN jacket fans and the like.

not really a preppy garment but you can wear it preppily, sure
>>
It seems to me that Anglo-American prep is very understated, most of the time. Bold colours, but mostly to say: I don't give a fuck.

But it sometimes seems almost prudish. Aggressively frowsty, it practically wages war on elegance, in favour of hotchpotch casual.

This has its charm, but I'm curious. Is it a characteristic of old-family upper classes to make a huge show of not caring, or just those of the English speaking world?

Do these principles apply in continental Europe, for example?
>>
>>11199531
It comes with the idea of new money and old money. I don't think its just Anglo-American; the French definitely do it as well (nouveau rich).

The new money are more likely to flaunt their wealth with things the old rich deem gaudy. An example of this is the Chinese new rich with big logo Bape everything or Middle Easterns with the biggest Gucci belt buckle and Burberry-plaid everything.

The old money, stereotypically, show their wealth through more 'tasteful, refined' displayed of fashion and luxury
>>
>>11199531
>>11199600
Forgot to link it back to the original post: Anglo-Americans (especially this attending Ivy League university's) have long been rich compared to their counterparts in other countries
>>
>>11199600
There's also a long tradition of the upper class wishfully believing in an American classness-ness. They publicly prefer shows of philanthropy towards the poor, not arrogance. We're all humans with equal dignity, money can't define you etc. even if they don't actually believe it in private.
>>
>>11199600
I'm thinking more old money versus old money.
(And I mean both the English of England and the WASPs of America when I say Anglo-Americans.)

It's easy to look at rich anglos and conclude, "that's refinement," but that might be a narrow view.

Hard to fault the Anglo-Americans on formal and business wear. They wrote the book, and what they produced is impeccable.

The casual stuff confuses me a little, though. I find it hard to imagine a French equivalent to a British sloane ranger willingly wearing an enormous sack of a country coat.
Maybe it's the old contrast of centralised Versailles with hundreds of aristocratic apartments to scattered country estates in England; the American old money crowd are almost as scattered.

Elegance is there, just only when absolutely necessary like at black tie events.

The rest of the time, it's a power move to dress in a way that says "I don't have a boss here." The guy who manages your money has to cleave to rules about sock colors and matching his cufflinks to his belt, but you, the guy with the dick, can grab your socks out of a drawer and dress the way you did in college for the rest of your life. It's also more fun than being elegant because it requires a more practiced eye for color and such to avoid crossing the line where you look like a clown. This trickiness is another thing that makes it a status symbol. You LEARNED to dress this way through years of exposure to the right circles in private school and social clubs in college. Someone trying to ape it will trip up a lot in ways that aren't apparent to the uninitiated.

That's all a simplification, but you see what I'm saying. It's like how there are a thousand ways to mark yourself as a scrub in the ghetto. Don't carry a white lighter and all that. There may be an aesthetic reason for it, but a lot of it is proving that you're from the tribe.
>>
