The Bonfire of Vanities.
When I was living in LA a few years ago I saw Bret Easton Ellis in a West Hollywood 7-11 eating a hot dog.
>>10997139
was he fat?
copped from dope little used bookstore in San Luis Obispo, great conversation starter
>>10997145
Yeah. He looked like shit - sloppy as fuck, strung out, and overweight. It was kind of sad, t b h.
>>10997208
Those go for around $50-$70 nowadays
>>10997264
thats because long ago he realised long ago that he'd only be remembered for A.P. nobody knows any of his other works
>>10997264
that is sad t h o
>>10997272
neat. I paid $10, but it had some grime and mold.
>>10997334
"long ago" twice. . . yes i do have autism.
>>10995729
You buy books to be /fa/? Pathetic
>>10997334
Which sucks, because his other works are genuinely good. American Psycho is arguably an outlier to what is a bigger theme of wealthy ennui in his books.
While I'm sure he felt some weird sense of loneliness after the popularity of American Psycho waxed and waned, I suspect a lot of his more depressive swings come from his personality. His work and his background match up scarily well (even ignoring Lunar Park), which indicates to me that he has a pretty negative view of the world in general.
Finished it a week ago, started off really slow but intense halfway through.

Literature undergrad book-list tier.

>i'm a 14 yr old dumbass who thinks any rand has any literary merit whatsoever
YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE THE BEST SHAKESPEAREAN HISTORY
>>10995875
Love love love this. The second book is probably my favorite of the seven.
You really ought to read the translation that Christopher Prendergast oversaw for Penguin. It's a brilliant update and I think it should replace Moncrieff as the standard.

Not all books have to be art you know. Just like not all enjoyable music has to be good or all like able movies have to be cinema-tier
>>10995949
looks like books you would be assigned in high school.
keep trying to look smart anon

No, unless you mean the photo quality, then yes shitty iphone cameras are a meme anon.
>>10998105
I bought the rand novel on recommendation of a friend, I try to stay open minded despite the negative connotation you and others give the author. Also I only buy books on sale so its just whatever Shakespeare I picked up for a dollar or two a book/ some are not in my current room.
>>10998221
I read Heart of Darkness, Frankenstein, The Pearl, & Tale of Two Cities.
Are you implying HoD isn't fa?
>>10998221
>Trying to look smart
What are you even implying with this?
I get how Dostoevsky and Ayn Rand might be seen as pseudo-intellectual, but just those two in this mix doesn't really feel like I'm trying that hard. If you're implying reading Shakespeare is trying to look smart you are a pleb.

Conrad might be more /fa/ than Chinua Achebe, but that's not saying much.
>>11001039
New trip talking shit? Who could have guessed.
Post some recommendations then.
As your post is now is why everyone ridicules tripcodes.
>>11001051
>Chinua Achebe
What are you getting at?
Because the setting is in Africa this is relevant?
>>11001059
I just wanted to pick the author who called Conrad a bloody racist, which he probably was. What he wasn't (and isn't) was /fa/.
>>11001089
I get the complaint he poses, that Conrad dehumanized the Africans and treated Africa as a lost world. He exaggerates qualities of the tertiary characters and setting to create progression in the story, this isn't uncommon in fiction. Its not like the main antagonist Kurtz is a black guy demonizing them further. To be clear even if the book racist, but the story really isn't about that.
Besides, a story about introspection, solitude and madness seems pretty aligned with fa to me. I do appreciate Apocalypse Now though so I'm pretty biased. Not to reemphasize this was a book chosen by my high school, not one of my own personal taste.
>>10998126
This is a truly worthy book
>>10997743
fucking superb trilogy...
>>10997743
Read The Man Who Came in from the Cold. It's very good.
