Fuck fancy plated meals at high-end restaurants. I've been to my share of bleedingly-expensive restaurants, and they all end up being mediocre and overhyped. There are a lot of places like that in D.C., and they're all cut from the same cloth: American or Italian cuisine, over-designed, and food that tastes like it was microwaved in the back.

What rocks: hole-in-the-wall ethnic food that takes you out of your comfort zone. Case in point, Ethiopian food is pretty easy to find here, and it's rad as hell (the more raw, the better, though I've gotten massively sick that way). Same with Peruvian chicken, Vietnamese pho, etc.

Pic related. Gored Gored. You rip off some of the injera (a sort of sour bread) and use it as a utensil to scoop the delicious meat/spice. Goddamn delicious.

Foggy Bottom isn't exactly the hot spot for good food. I've pretty much checked out every place there and haven't found anything that blew my mind.

With that said:
- Penn Grill is amazing and the old Asian guy there is rad as fuck but it's a quick way to get fat on stir fry
- Roti, Potbelly, etc. are okay and will take your GWU card I think, students at those places all the time
- Founding Farmers is good like twice. You'll tire of it fast.
- I can confirm that the following places blow: Circa, Rasika, BTS, District Commons, Bobby's Burger Palace, Bertucci's, anything on I St.
- IIRC the girl that works at Poppabox is cute as fuck, so go there at least once. Their food isn't great the last time I went.

Your best strategy is to hop the metro to Dupont Circle or Adams Morgan and/or walk to Georgetown. The places there are so-so. You could also cab to Annandale, which is where the adorable Korean shit is.
>>
>>10905237
Thanks for the genuine help f.am, will check out penn grill and qt girl. Are you a student or resident?
>>
>>10905257

Lawyer in the city. There was a period where I had a fuckbuddy in Foggy Bottom (who WAS a student) so I was there a lot.

Ngl, I love when people talk about Ethiopian food, its just so underrated.
It's nice having extremely Ethiopian parents that constantly stock homemade injera, might go warm some up for dinner now.
I actually know a couple of Ethiopian restaurant owners in DC and Virginia and it's okay, but they usually use domestic teff (flour), which is cheaper but not as good as imported whole wheat teff. Most Ethiopian restaurants have inferior ingredients, I'd try to get invited to dinner at an house with the good homemade stuff.
>>
>>10905271

you're the reason i come to fa
>>
>>10905288
>>10905174

how does it work though? I see that you rip the underlying bread, but do you rip in such a way that it forms like a taco around the heap of food?
>>
>>10905311
probably am retarded for even asking, but it looks like it could potentially be a big mess.
>>
>>10905311
Nah. You rip off a small piece and use your thumb and forefinger to pinch food between the pieces of injera. It's somewhat messy.
>>
>>10905311
It's kinda hard to explain, especially since I wasn't really taught but instead I grew up with it. You kinda rip a piece off and scoop it by pinching it.

This video shows it pretty well though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IQ4ds7-Zqk

Fucking dropped. Just kidding - everything there looks good. It's just that kitfo is my favorite Ethiopian dish.

Have you been to "Burma" restaurant, though (it's a Burmese place that is just called "Burma")? It's one of my favorite places in DC.
>>
>>10905347

>>
>>10905351
Oh, shit, I just searched Yelp, and it seems closed. I wonder when it closed.

I think the last time I was there was a couple of years ago.
>>
>>10905340
You definitely should. Make sure you can handle spicy food and try a variety platter like >>10905174.
You'll generally get:
-a non-spicy lentil sauce (the yellow one)
-A spicy lentil sauce (the red/brownish one on top)
-A couple vegetable mixes consisting of anything from kale (known as goman; in right of pic) to various spicy peppers mixed together)
-A brown spicy sauce called doro wat (its pretty good, if you get it get some boiled eggs or chicken doused in it as well)
-One of a variety of cooked beef. Just beef cut and doused in something spicy and tasty then cooked. Sometimes barbequed into tibs (or however you spell that, it's weird converting amharic into readable english)

Other things that aren't pictured to get:
-Kitfo, as picutred in >>10905347 is generally considered a favourite amongst Ethiopians, not sure about how it sits with others
-Ibe, a cottage cheese type thing that helps you cool down if your meal is too spicy
-Fit Fit, just soggy injera bits mixed with cooked lamb bits, usually eaten on religious holidays

>>10905347
Ayyy who else /habesha/ here?
Also doro eggs are my favourite thing on injera but I always like Kita or Besu better than injera bc I'm pleb

Even refined sugar (not always vegan tho) isnt that bad, diabetes isnt caused by high sugar intake. It is the combination of fat and sugar which causes the insulin not to reach the liver. This results in the liver continuing to produce its own sugar.

If you're asking why we have fake chicken nuggets and shit, that's because it's convenient and we grew up eating meat in those forms. A lot of it tastes pretty good too.
Veganism isn't about hippie bullshit, it's about trying not to contribute to pointless death. We don't need to slaughter billions of creatures a year just because they taste good. There are also several environmental reasons.

When I was like 8, I ate my cousins entire jug of that shit.
I saw it on his dresser. I wanted just a little bit. But a little wasn't enough so I tried for more.
I kept taking a little more until it was all gone.
He was pissed when he found out.

Best I have had were not prepackaged. The most tolerable prepackaged was Follow Your Heart. Of fresh vegan cheeses, the best was on a pizza I had in Mexico. The cheese was made from potato. Another good one I had was in Dallas at a raw vegan place, and it was made from cashew.

Just so you know, meat is carcinogenic because you cook it. Especially searing and grilling. In fact, the carbon you're creating when you char food (the burnt bits) is actually the carcinogen. Grilled veggies, hell grilled or seared ANYTHING, have carcinogens as well.

Boycott grills, not meat, you ignorant vegan twat.
