Thread is normally made out of polyester so it doesn't bleach or dye.

If you want to do it right, tape the edges, use acetone soaked cotton balls to remove the coating, and then hit it with ink or dye, even layers of black shoe polish if you wanted.

Eh, I've worn them pretty much daily since they're comfortable so they're getting a bit run down, and it's got scratches/scuffs/hole so can't really wear them for the aesthetics anyway

the sweatshirt has to be made of cotton first,
then the dye should be plant based,
what i recommend doing is dyeing the garment and then wringing it and rinsing the dye out prematurely.

generic light wash is in right now I wouldn't destroy them.

you could maybe distress them lightly by sanding around all the hardware carefully and the hem to get a little fraying.
