Anons who are in high school or early university should read her first book, The Secret History.

>>
>>10874119
I've actually been collecting books I've already read or (w/r/t textbooks) know the subject matter of - lost a lot of my collection way back in the day, now collecting hardbacks for fun.

I got a 1936 copy of Moby Dick - one of my favorite novels - that's legit amazing. Beautiful illustrations, appears to be hand-bound, just goddamn pretty.

I also found a 1911 book on metallurgy (which I know a bit about) that's obviously quite useless at this point but that has a ridiculously hefty quality to it. Love it to death.

just finished The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles. One character gets typhoid fever and goddamn the descriptions of his psyche as he suffers from it. Great work.

currently reading a collection of short stories by Ethan Coen. not very good really, but it occasionally has some of that signature Coen bros. humor so it's not a total waste of time

From my experience (a few issues of LEON and shit like that), most people are just fascinated. I wouldn't be insecure about it.

But I know that feeling - a weeaboo friend of mine wrote a really self-serving mary sue style anime book and I bought one to be a good friend. It's currently hiding in my closet, aint no way that's going in my bookshelves

I'm currently reading The Martian, favorite book is Old Man and The Sea. Got a pretty large backlog, looking at The Stranger and Being and Nothingness next, end goal is getting into Joyce.

sorry, it was because the first half of you post is fucking stupid. I mean if you don't see how calling E.H. a meme is shit headed, then fuck you, and everything you stand for, but I still wanted to answer your question, so I did. Why don't you read 3 Hemmingway books then try to read Dostoyevsky, the writing styling difference is fucking jarring. Just go back to your cop or not thread

>>10877639
I read it because it was short, and i thought it would be a good sample, and I liked it enough to read FWtBT, and I'm glad it got me to do that.
>>
>>10877760
Lmao, I was referring to the double-m spelling of Hemingway which is an old (and shitty) meme. Also I've read more than three Hemingway books as well as The Brothers Karamazov and I can see your issue with the writing style, but maybe the difference in subject matter and complexity of the plot is a bigger problem.

>>10874842

Cormac is an incredible writer. I enjoyed The Sunset Limited a lot (though it's lacking in some areas as a play), and HBO did a pretty good film interpretation of it.

>>10874868

Kafka is GOAT. >>10875590 and >>10876203
both mentioned Camus, and he is a nice place to start, but honestly, if you enjoy what Kafka presents, you may find his conclusions to be a bit lackluster and unfounded in their optimism. I would recommend Sartre more strongly, because his journey to the somewhat similar (but less disappointing) conclusion is more enjoyable. Nausea is a good place to start.
