Suggestions? Seiko?

buying from decent brands with watch manufacturer history = great watch

buying from shitty fashion designer brands = shit watch

then buy a quartz watch but consider paying more like $60-90. Lorus is a great poorfag brand owned by Seiko and Casio pretty much as well. Festina is fine too but they cost a bit more. watch out for case diameter and depth so you don't buy a huge ass watch that you can't wear if it doesn't fit.

I only own one Casio watch but that one is an analog-digital one and it doesn't have a seconds hand but regardless, this one should be fine. but just to make sure, you should check amazon reviews or reviews online in general and see what people say about that Casio. usually they talk about it if there is loud ass watch ticking.

I paid $2000 for an Omega quartz. What's the big deal? 5 years later and it's still running on the original battery.

100% accurate, loses and gains no seconds per day unlike automatics.

You get what you pay for. Automatic watches are certainly not superior to quartz watches in any way. It's just a matter of preference i.e. if you appreciate how an automatic works or not.

I personally, don't give a shit about the mechanics of my watch and I can literally build automatic watches myself.

If you're paying that much for a quartz with other features such as solar, radio controlled, gmt and all that shit combined then yeah fine by me.

But if it's just a plain quartz with date function, then it's just the same as any other quartz. You're paying more just for the brand name.

No hate on quartz, I know the history and why it's important but I can't justify spending that much. But hey it's your money and if you like how it looks then who gives a shit.

But automatic movements aren't expensive either. You can buy swiss clones for $50 that can be put into any watch.

Of course it's for the brand. But that's true of any product ever. You pay more for the name. Even the likes of Seiko have a brand premium. They are making huge profits on every watch because they don't cost a fraction of the price to make.

Does someone know where I can still get an Orient Ray in blue for a decent price? (in europe)
Since they came out with a new mako version, i can't seem to find blue ray's anywhere anymore, or blue mako's for that matter.
The ones I do find are either way too expensive or are on rubber straps instead of SS bracelets.

Pic kinda related, it's a mako xl not a ray.
>>
>>10821725
21 mm straps tend to be lower quality

Most people just buy higher end 20 mm straps and let it slide back and forth a mm which I think gives the impression of a poorly constructed watch
>>
>>10821753
I have a black mako, old style from 2010. Don't worry about it. It was always a soso watch

Orient recently up their quality and their price point.

If you look on their site everything at their old price is now a quartz watch and all the new shit is around $400

It used to be around $200 for all of their mechanical watches
>>
>>10821764
Depends on where you buy them ofcourse. A 21mm Hirsch strap is not going to be worse than a 22mm Hirsch strap.
But I could see cheap chinese 21mm straps being worse than 22mm ones. But then again, cheap chinese straps suck in general.

>>10821775
It also sucks that they won't give europe the mako USA, $225 for 120 click bezel and sapphire crystal was basicly what the old one was missing.

what does /fa/ think of the classic gshock?

i've had another gshock for many years but gave it away so now i need to buy a new watch.

the classic gshock has all the functionality that i need, that is, solar (no need to charge), radio (no need to set), gshock (will never break), digital (easy to read fast, i'm used to digital), and light+resin band (comfortable, wear-and-forget).

the only thing slithly holding me back is the look, i am undecided about it.

the reason i am sweating this is because i want to buy a watch for many years (5+). i'm currently a law/polsci student, finishing in about two years, fyi.

what does /fa/ think of the looks of this watch, would it fit all possible use cases? where wouldn't it fit?

i tried wearing a watch for "style" but i was pissed off 99% of the time because it's bugging my arm, hard to read, afraid it will break, and much of the time it's hidden underneath clothing anyways.

is pic related really *unbearably* nerdy?
>>
Opinions on asos own-brand watches?
>>
>>10822852
It's ugly as shit. Aren't they like $20 or something anyway, why not get a nice looking watch for fashion purposes and the gshock for when you actually are going to be doing exercise or physical labor or something where you might damage a regular watch?

Or if you want just one watch then do you really need something so rugged that even an automatic diver or something wouldn't cut it? Something like an SKX007 or one of the Orient divers would be pretty cheap and from experience I can tell you that the SKX at least can take a decent beating, but at the same time the watches look pretty nice. They don't need any batteries (not that a regular quartz needing a battery change once in like 5 years is such a hassle anyway), they're probably accurate enough for daily life unless you have crippling autism, you learned how to read an analog clock in the first grade, and they're not that heavy.
>>

SKX007 (~$200) plus a super oyster bracelet ($55). 200m WR, true ISO diver certification, screwdown crown, Hardlex crystal but I can assure you it's very very hard to scratch.

I think it's a hell of a watch and it's so ugly and purposeful that it looks good and it punches above its price bracket and it's already a classic from Seiko's long-running cheap diver line, plus it's on its way to getting discontinued and replaced soon.

I don't know shit all about watches and the strap is a cheap fake leather that replaced the original. I can also see a little dirt inside the clockface and the display is a little scratched.

There are no more American watchmakers unless you want to spend like $10,000 on an ugly RGM watch or $500 on a Shinola made entirely in China except for the final little bit of the assembly where all the parts get slapped together in Detroit. Any watch that says Swiss Made on it is going to have the bare minimum of exactly 50% of the parts sort of made in Switzerland and the rest of it is going to be straight from China. That's just how globalization works and pretending anything Swiss Made is actually entirely made in Switzerland by hand by expert craftsmen Swiss old men hunched over a workbench is a fantasy.

If you really care then you're going to have to buy vintage. There were lots of American brands like Hamilton, Elgin, Waltham, and others. Hamilton lasted the longest and as such made the most wristwatches, the other brands made mostly pocketwatches. Make sure the watch is actually American though, eventually around the 60s Hamilton moved their production to Switzerland and eventually ceased to exist entirely and the brand name was bought by the Swatch group.

There were too many Swiss brands to even list, you should be able to find something. Just buy something from before the quartz crisis and the formation of the Swatch Group because that was when quality went down the shitter and all the brands started either dying or cutting corners as much as possible to survive.

But really does it even matter where it was made? There are plenty of shit vintage Swiss watches floating around with atrocious pin-pallet movements and shoddy construction, just like there are plenty of good watches from Japan or from China or from whatever unnamed Asian country.

Literally anyone in any country can make a diving watch that will survive light swimming, the bare minimum to be called a diver these days is 200m and only a couple of humans have ever gone deeper than that. You should be fine.

42mm looks like shit, the proportions are bad and it's too big for a vintage style watch. Get the 38mm acrylic, it looks way better than the sapphire crystal which is the wrong shape and the sapphire version of the watch has a retarded extra metal bezel thing because the crystal is the wrong shape.

Acrylic really isn't very inconvenient, you just have to polish it for 5 minutes every couple of weeks maybe to keep it brand new, and sapphire isn't really necessary anyway since that isn't a "tough" watch at all and you shouldn't be beating it up anyway.

I wasn't a big fan of my 1963 in the end anyway and I ended up selling it because it's such a delicate little special snowflake, but it's definitely a very beautiful watch and you're certainly not going to find a cheaper mechanical chrono anywhere else.

Of course you can remove it from a real Rolex, they don't use some magic fucking Swiss Made glue. You can melt the glue a bit with some heat and scrape the cyclops off just like on any watch, or you could soak the crystal in a solvent until the glue melts. Also Rolex will be very pissed off when you send in the watch for servicing and they will replace it with a new one with the cyclops attached and they will charge you for it.

By the way this only applies to sapphire crystal models because the cyclops is a separate piece glued onto the crystal. The acrylic crystals are a single piece.

Get an SKX007. It's the best diver in its price range, prove me wrong.

But really is there any logical reason why you're excluding Seiko and Orient? Because their divers pretty much dominate that price bracket in my opinion. OM Explorer like another anon said is a very good option too if you want to be contrarian and if OM decides to make another run of the watches, other microbrands like the Halios you posted are good as well but are probably going to be above your pricerange.
>>
>>10831805
Because they're fucking generic. They're good watches, but I see reason in wanting to stray from Japanese brands. I think people tend to envision a "real" watch as Swiss. Everybody and their dog has a Seiko dive watch. There's no shame in wanting a less generic watch.
>>
>>10831815
I've certainly never seen anyone else wearing an SKX in person, and I don't think it looks particularly close to the "generic" submariner diver design.

If you wanted something Swiss why didn't you just say that? Get ready to spend a lot more though, Tissot is trash and although Hamilton has some pretty nice watches in their lineup none of the good ones are divers so you're going to need to look at at least Longines tier if you want to find a decent diver from Swatch. Outside of Swatch it's pretty much just submariner clones like Steinhart and Squale which are both very nice watches but also not what you asked for. It looks like microbrands will probably be your best option.
>>
>>10831805
because all their designs look 70s for some reason. they're very dated

Well the SKX is pretty much a direct continuation of the line of divers Seiko has been making since the 60s so I guess that's why. Personally I like it and I think it's nice that they have their own unique heritage to pull from instead of being yet another Rolex ripoff, but if you just don't like it then I guess you don't like it. Unfortunately for you their upcoming SKX replacement is going to be pretty much a modern remake of the 6309 because every single watch brand seems to be going through a vintage reissue phase.

"soon". They're already available in Asia so I imagine it won't be long until they start showing up everywhere else. I'm guessing they'll be selling around $300-400 for a while before they eventually settle down closer to the current prices for SKX007s.

Also apparently just today they announced another new diver series called Transocean: https://www.seiko-watch.co.jp/news/pressrelease/posts/493/20160113
They're supposed to be dressy divers, MSRP around $1000 in USD, 6R15 movement with ceramic bezel, diashield coated case, AR coated sapphire crystal, and diver's extension. Hopefully those end up in the US too because they look pretty neat.
>>
>>10831972
If it's acrylic then yes you can easily polish it with Polywatch. If it's mineral glass then you should just get it replaced. Also how in the fuck did you scratch them that badly? You might want to consider something with sapphire next time although with that much of a beating a sapphire crystal might have just shattered instead.

Maurice Lacroix is another one of these.
At least with other pompous frenchie sounding name companies the name refers to the founders or someone important to the company in some way.

But maurice was a fabricated name for the purposes of sounding "swiss french" to sell to people that buy watches from their local mall.

There's a story that the name was a joke because it belonged to the janitor of the building of those that created the brand.

Either way, using a fake name to elude to some kind of deeper history or lineage puts me off this brand entirely.
