Is it possible to wear a bow tie and not come across as a trendy asshole, a fop, or overly formal?

I think you can, but here are some conditions
>don't be in a frat
>always have long pants on with it
>suspenders probably help make it look better
>sleeves rolled up a bit
>no eccentric colored shirt/pants
>well kept hair
>make sure it's a real tie, not a clip on, and make sure it's tied nicely
Follow those rules and you might not come off as a trendy asshole, but no promises tobehonestfam, the frats have really done a good job bastardizing it
it is literally impossible- you will always look like a tryhard dork

>having to follow this many steps to make bowties look good

I mean hey, the guy wanted to know if he could, so I laid out some guidelines. It's not even that many, basically summarized as "don't dress like a frat boy who wants to pretend his dad is rich and that he was popular in high school"
why would you want to wear a bowtie to anything that isn't a formal event

Honestly, dope. You do look like a trendy bitch, but that's besides the point. You've got the frame to rock it. Lose the hat doe.

Thats Russel Westbrook senpai, one of the more /fa/ nba superstars. He wears some shit but he also wears some really nice stuff

Black tie is an obvious exception - I just went to a black tie party today and had to wear one. Hated it because real bow ties are a BITCH to tie nicely, but still.
I don't think there's anything wrong with coming off a little preppy or formal, at least within reason. The tie you posted could be mixed with tweed and - assuming the person doesn't come off like a douche - look somewhat nice.
To be honest, I don't dislike bowties in isolation - it's all about the people who wear them. If you aren't foppish, then I don't think there's much of an issue.

Well, fuck me. I was never into basketsports, but the more you know.

Only way I can see it work is if your a middle aged to old man who works either as a professor or archeologist.

no because then you look like you’re going to a dress up party (those silly geek costumes)
I wore a bow tie once or twice casually. Guys will think you're a dork and a fag but girls think it's cute and will comment on it.
If you have any female friends ask them wether they would think it's cool. People on 4chan should not be trusted on anything.

Go for a more relaxed material such as tweed, donegal, brushed wool and any rugged texture when chosing your bowtie. That always looks less pretentious.
As the other anon said, suspenders actually helps quite a bit.
Make sure the rest or your fit is well curated and proper fitted.
