ORRRR you can have control cuts and cut the back and side and let the TOP grow
You need long length on the TOP to make long hair look good, if you just let the side and the back grow while the top is the kinda same length but not longer it's going to look like shit.

also OP, the top grows like 4 times slower than the sides and back or something. so thats why it looks bad when you just try to grow it out without doing any control.
