The M-65 Field Coat, aka the most versatile jacket in existence.

Pic related is what one of mine looks like, black Alpha M65 with the epaulettes removed to make it not dwarf my neck and to make it even more versatile.

Which one do you own?
Why don't you own one if you don't?
Why haven't you copped the best layering piece known to man?
Why didn't your Vietnam vet uncle give you his?

I'll post my actual jacket when I get the chance to take a pic.

Is it something you can get from Army surplus?

can you reccomend me a looser fitting variant of the m65 field coat?

>>
>>10584521
Yes, probably the easiest thing to find in surplus stores and anyone worth their salt will know what you want when you ask for it.

>>10584543
Alpha Industries, Rothco
I personally don't like Rothco, so I'd go with Alpha. Size one down from your normal size and you should still have a relatively loose fit, along with not using the drawstrings in the jacket.

ok lad

>>10584597
Note: the sizing only applies to Alpha's standard M65. I can't vouch for the anniversary edition or the slim version.

I agree with you but the majority of /fa/ are skinny fags who don't have the frame to fill out a standard M65 and they won't hit the gym because muh skinny jeans so I'm just supplying an alternative. Modern variations can be awesome. I don't think that one is, personally, but it's a quick image.

I like the Yost n Fuel Field Jacket.

I got one last year and I'd say it's the least regrettable clothing purchase I've ever made. It's not the most worn jacket I have but it goes with about anything, is super durable, and rainproof. It's a great workhorse jacket that I can guarantee I'll keep until it gets ruined or lost even if it'll never be the most interesting jacket I could choose from.
>>
Recently got a military issue OD Green M65. Cannot recommend military issue enough. More durable than any coat I've had that wasn't leather. Goes god tier with hoodies, basically makes an outfit for you.
>>
>>10585074
Least regrettable purchase anyone could make other than well fitting jeans. Durable, functional and good looking.

>>10585204

I have this one, deffinatelly one of my best cops. Not really sure how the velcro at the end of each sleeve works or what it is for :|
>>
Just got this in last week, haven't had a chance to wear it outside yet though.
>>
>>10586285
It's something about rolling the sleeve. I forget desu. I just tighten my cuff about 3/4ths of the way and fold the Velcro arrow flap.

>>10586432
I don't like the designs all over it but the silhouette is really good imo. If it just had that little patch and then a uniform color and design I'd wear it.
>>
>>10586432
Also I like the drawstring design
>>
>>10587004

I wasn't too sure about the motifs too initially but they look more muted in person compared to that picture so I got over it quickly. Also helps that it was quite heavily discounted!

The William Gibson x Buzz Rickson's is like the perfect manifestation of the m65 idea. It's so gorgeous. I wish I could spend that money on a field jacket.

http://ameblo.jp/freak-staffblog/entry-11939786203.html
>>
Where do I find one sized for a manlet?
>>
>>10590180
nah you're only nerding out on it because it has the william gibson name
its not that special or good. very overpriced.
>>
>>10590257
Yeah, I admit it. In the end it's just a field jacket, and you can get one that does the same thing for a quarter the price from Helikon or the like. But there's still something appealing about having the concept realized to such a high standard.

Do you have the Rickson's?

>>10590255
I guess the WG line is discontinued for now so look on e.g. Rakuten. The ameblo.jp shop above might still have them, theirs is coincidentally the short size as well. Or you can get the olive M-65 from Rickson's (it's patterned directly after the original while the black WG one has a slightly more effay cut).

I agree with anon that it may not be worth spending the money on such a basic item though. The price kind of negates the beater functionality of a field jacket.
>>
>>10590313
I had a gibson ma-1 before. was ok for how much i got it on auction (yahoo). luckily flipped it quick. do not pay retail

I'm 5'9, 154lbs (175cm, 69kg). Will an Alpha Industries M65 look too big/long on me? If not, what size should I get?

Is Alpha good quality or is it not worth it spending 150+ on an M65?
>>
>>10590415
You could try an xs but I'm 6'1" 205lbs and a medium is a little big on me. I'd look for a fashion brand or use it as an outer layer.

>>
>>10590423
Alpha also makes a "slim" version of their classic M65 (alphaindustries.com/mens-field-coats/alpha-industries-slim-fit-m-65-field-coat.htm)
Perhaps that would be better?
How's the quality on your M65?
>>
>>10590456
I still see the link between those and the m65 but I see what you're saying, this isn't exactly the first thing you think of looking for a m65
>>
>>10590457
It definitely could be, but I mentioned earlier in this thread I can't vouch for sizing on anything but the standard. Do a little research, ask questions, even call alpha and they might help. They helped me with bomber sizing.

Quality is fantastic. The only thing I thought would give me problems is the buttons for the liner but they've even held up. I've had mine for two years, it's basically in the same like new condition except broken in and more comfy. I've scraped it on rock while climbing, worn it in winter storms with a north face under it, slept in it in a tent, used it as a cover for rain for me and a friend, worn it many times in a manufacturing environment with oil everywhere, and it's just been beat up in general and it's still going strong.

I washed it once when I first got it, treated it with scotchguard, mostly around the pockets. I removed the hood so it feels better on my upper back. Alternatively, if you use the hood, be sure to fold it back in properly otherwise it'll feel like a small object just sitting on your traps. It's annoying as fuck.

Basically alpha made them for the military and has mostly kept that quality imo.
>>
>>10590470
I see how the M65 was definitely inspiration. They look good and could be pulled off in some ways in the general public though imo. Layering them on top of more formal wear could be cool
>>
>>10584449
I have two m65's. One in black size S w/liner for serious layering and one in olive drab XS w/out liner for warmer weather/less layers.

Love them both
>>
>>10590574

Awesome senpai. Is there any way you can post a pic of you in the small? what's your height & weight?

I want to cop a small for the reason you have an xs and I'm mostly worried about length.
>>
>>10590580
Sure. Give me an hour or so, I'm at work.

I'm a manlet at 5'7" 150 and the S is definitely too big if I was wearing just a tshirt underneath. I usually wear at least a white t, henley type shirt and a zip up or normal sweatshirt/sweater under that one and it fits better.
>>
>>10590588
Are both of your M65 Alpha Industries?
>>
>>10584449
I've owned one since I was a kid, grew into it during High School, and occasionally scotch guard it to give it a better water shell. I have a liner from http://www.kommandostore.com/by-country/czech-republic-czechoslovakia/czech-m60-thermal-jacket-liner.html that fits it for winter. It is usually my late fall/winter jacket.

My advice? Just get a surplus one, American or otherwise, because civilian versions of military clothing tends to lack in functionality.
>>
>>10590736
Pic of yours?
>>
Its in the 60s-70s (degrees) here during the fall/winter. Would the Alpha one be too hot to wear?
>>
>>10590820
Get smallest size you can and skip the liner.
>>
>>10590822
Seconded
>>
Surplus has the advantage that, if you have the patience to look for your size, it comes in different cuts starting from like XXShort running parallel to regular sizing, so there can be e.g. an XXShort-Medium. You can get one that fits your shape exactly.
>>
>>10590759
I'm at work, if I remember when I get home I'll send a pic.
>>
>>10590966
That'd be cool desu senpai
>>
Looks so gross. The epaulets and excessive pockets do not work for ur average everyday fit (unless u actually do some rugged work and have some mass). You look like a kid in an oversized 20$ coat u found Macy's if u don't have the build for it
>>
>>10591249
So much edge.
>>
>>10591249
Nothing works easily for all builds and styles.
>>
>>10591249
Actual military issue models are designed to fit loosely, even for an athletic military physique, so generally you want to size down 1.
>>
>>10591637
For most of /fa/ it'll likely be two sizes. Three for skinny short guys sometimes
>>
Does a draped scarf go pretty well with a field jacket?
>>
>>10584449
Actually did have my uncle's Vietnam m65

Some shitbird stole it from me and ran off to Montana. Completely erased his fucking identity. Been looking for him for three years. Too poor for a private detective.

Could work but the camo makes it a lot less likely to work
>>
>>10592566
You're prolly right, something like a simple overshirt would be a better option

Work it into a lighter fit that goes with the colors in the camo. But it's definitely not a staple piece in your wardrobe. Just a nice accent that works sometimes.
>>
>>10592509
if you're asian, then yes. You'll look like the rest of the international faggots. If not, then eh. The jacket on its own could work, i personally like camo, but not with the sandals/pinrolled jeans combo.

I've read the Rothco is a bit lighter and the pockets aren't as deep as the original. Just something to consider if you plan on using them, which is obv part of the appeal. You could probably find a surplus one fitted just right for the same price, especially if you live in the US.

You could also consider the Helikon, which is very rugged and true to spec but has a weird bright colour in the olive version. Their black m65 is fab though.
>>
>>10593357
I'm not a fan of Rothco for m65's
I picked up a navy one and it all around felt cheap and it couldn't have been to spec.

The problem I tend to have with field jackets is that I'm a short at 5'7'', and most of the field jackets I find in the states are fit for a 6'' man.

So, they tend to end up right above my knee.
>>
>>10594509
That's weird. You sure you're not looking at parka's specifically?

I too am a manlet at 5'7" and the m65 I picked up from Ted's Military Surplus doesn't hang much below my waist. Jacket is an XS w/no liner
>>
>>10594509
You should be able to get milsurp m65s in different lengths and widths. I mean the length measurement is separate from the size measurement. Some of the expensive reproductions do the same, although with less options than the army ones.
>>
>>10594566
Yeah, you're right. It's more of a parka, I'm honestly just shopping around and trying cheap military surplus on.

It's the skinnier jeans and your skinny build in general. But honestly if you just get some slightly looser jeans you'll look fine imo.

Also they look rugged because they dress rugged in aspects other than the jacket. But in reality you'll be fine as long as yours fits right, which yours does. It fits you well. So just be confident and you're golden imo.

the jacket is trash. let me explain why. first, too many pockets plus the epaulaet things makes it look too busy. second, the fabric sucks. literally if you are going into the outdoors with this, youre a moron. it cant handle rain, and wind will vut right through it. it doesnt appear to have a hood to protect your face or ears from cold and wind. if it gets wet youre fucked, as cotton canvas takes forever to dry. its not really going to keep you warm in any sense either. so it begs the question, what is the point of this jacket even existing? there is none. a simple hoodie , or anything for that matter, would give you more functionality than this. no one needs 4 huge pockets. no one. and the epaulets literally serve no purpose. just give me one good reason to wear this jacket. just one. the only reason anyone would consider wearing it is to look like some military poser fag who reads guns and ammo magazine and wants ppl to think he has some special combat training. stop kidding yourself, you know nothing about guns or combat. you're a loser and you always will be.

One part at least is true. The M65 doesn't work against prolonged rain although it does come waterproof-treated and keeps out a decent amount. But since you have pockets, you can just fold a rain poncho into one of them. Or, like, use an umbrella. The jacket is short and could never protect your legs from heavy rain to begin with.

The rest is bs, obvs. The liner is fucking warm, the jacket indestructible, the silhouette a matter of taste but a fashion classic.

Fjällrevens looks good. I'm hoping I can pull it off like pic. related, and not end up looking like som high school shooter.

There is no real surplus models where I live, only cheap rip off army style "rambo jackets", but is the Fjällreven a bit overpriced?

No, Fjällräven quality is really good for the price. The fits are also bit on the slim side, made for nordic people after all.

What is your height/weight? And what size are you getting?
>>

Good idea!
88 kg (194 lbs) and 176 cm (5 feet 9 inches)
I do lift, but I'm far from ripped.
I haven't measured yet, but I'm considering large.

Ten C field jacket. I've read some negative things about them, esp given the price (~a grand) but at least it's pretty.

Nah, that guy's got an M43, which are also mighty great.

M65s are better, tho.

Oh, and by the way, has anybody here ever tried dying an old olive M65 jet black? I've got a couple original issue Vietnam ones, and they fit absolutely perfect. I wanna black one, but I'll never find one that quality and that fits me so perfectly. I know I might have to sew on new black buttons, and I know the velcro part won't dye.... But still, I think it would look cool. Anybody happen top know if it's an unworkable idea?

The /k/ store has some parka style ones

i think thats a spiewak ash field coat
>>
>>10609294
It should be possible if it's a NyCo blend and the waterproofing has come off. I'm not sure I'd try on a Vietnam era one, but it might be cool as fuck so your call.
>>
>>10609294
I'd seek out someone that could work with it that already knows what they're doing. You'd be surprised how nice people are if you're 100% upfront about what you want. Call up a factory that dyes garments, even if they won't do it for you you could probably get some information about how it'll turn out, how easy it'll be, what kind of dye, etc..

I think it's a cool idea and you should try it.
