Tried improving mom and lass a bit, added shade to hair, non-shade eyes, and although barely noticeable, mom's lips got some shade too. On second thought, mom got a slight darker lips shade (Still hard to notice) and both got her eyes reverted to normal.

Which version do you guys prefer?

You know, the more "original" (in your words) characters you make, the harder it becomes to later alter them. Girls you have to use many belts/hair-pieces/hairpins/ribbons to complete their outfits are a pain in the ass to move around or place in different poses: Nice for one pic, not so good for the long run. Also, you'll probably have to spend another hour editing the pic outisde Kisekae, which isn't exactly fun either, and doesn't guarantees you'll net any feedback for that, so unless you want to do it for your own pleasure, it's not necessary for everyone to do it.

On the other hand, some stories are good/fun enough to compensate for their "simple" girls, and posting pics with borrowed girls feels kinda rude towards their original creator.

Well yeah of course the complex things are only meant to be used for a single picture with how important positioning can be. And I don't edit things outside the engine, that defeats the whole purpose.

Color gradients are much better. Bangs nicely match the "helmet" (just lacking a better term, I mean that part which is set at top left of the hair tab) (and unfortunately doesn't have any length/width sliders).

Everything you added then doesn't match these 2 parts at all and belongs to entirely different hairstyles, hair lenghts and haircuts. You definitely need to stick to the "curly" theme now, keep an eye on the overall length, more like try to just add a few curls here and there, to fill up gaps and so on.
Right now, it still looks like random elements randomly pasted over another. Sure, it definitely takes a lot of time to get consistency and a credible overall look - especially when it's supposed to be "messy"!

I use GIMP myself, and while it's not great, it's certainly better than Paint. The trick is keeping it simple, doing most of the work in-engine and cleaning up with the editor. For example here >>2004621 I just took two screens for the last pic, one with and one without Myre, put the latter on the bottom layer and then ereased her arm on the top layer.

It also leaves things open to imagination, which I personally enjoy.
