Sup fellow DIY masters of the universe
I have an old silver knife that just came into my collection and it's pretty worn or "tarnished". I'm no professional with silver but I'm pretty sure if I just cleaned it, it would just fade back
Is there anything I can do to keep its brilliance once polished? Could I do an epoxy coating?
I think you can electroplate silver with rhodium, don't know how /diy/ feasible that is though.

Oil, or wax. Really you are trying to keep oxygen away from the surface so it cannot react and form silver oxide, which is dark/black. Epoxy will do the trick but i wouldnt do it myself. Id wax

In a stove put a pot with 2 inches of water and a small piece of coconut soap. Let it boil and put your knife in it. In 1-2 minutes max your knife will be clean again, and you just need to wash it in cold water and... its done. After, store it in a clean fabric.

That's the best way to clean everything made of silver.

The tip is the silver must be submerse in the boiling water with coconut soap all the time (1-2 min max I believe) to clean it all.
I'm just thinking here, but I've got no real need for a silver knife perse, wouldn't it be easier to melt it down into something else so it becomes like a family heirloom and then wax it?

After polishing, you can seal it in a plastic bag with an anti tarnish strip. Very effective. Can store for years without any re-oxidation. Keeping it in a drawer or glass panel cabinet for display with an anti tarnish strip is less effective, but slows down the tarnish quite a bit.
