Hey guys,

Can we have a welding thread? I just made this weld to stop a leak on a steel pipe.
>>
that hold a lot of pressure? is that why it's so thick? or was there a port underneath it?

That is a terrible thing you have done. If thats a hydraulic ram, and if that is a crack you will learn why you dont do that. You shrink the honed barrel when you apply that much heat and you end up wit a bore that is no longer concentric. You best have a honing set up to fix that or you will end up seizing the piston in it.
>>
>>999014 i forgot to quote but the other work looks great. Just not the blob weld on the hydraulic ram. I really hope you took it apart. If you didnt there is a chance for arcing between the piston and barrel and then the seal will fail.

I made a brand recently, but I do regret welding on both sides, now the triangles aren't as formed because I grinded down the weld

I'm getting hired at shipyards soon for welding, they give noobs a training but i've never done this shit before, any advice ?
>>
>>999782
>any advice ?
The usual. Be humble, work like a bitch, follow advice.

Also if your puddle looks nice odds are your weld's gonna be nice. Don't be one of those chucklefucks who keep welding when something's obviously wrong.
Also I don't know much about welding in shipyards specifically but as a general rule when metalworking you should git gud at working with angle grinders.
>>
>>999782
Bring a welding cap or some sort, those sparks burn your hair off

Clean your bead before you weld another one on top of it to prevent slag inclusions

I assume that shipyards is mostly stick welding, i'll post a few links to videos I found helpful about stick

They are a bit old but it's straight forward in a visual presentation that is helpful for this kind of stuff

I work at a shipyard. they mostly use FCAW MAG since this is the fastest and easiest way. Shipbuilding is good place to start welding. lots of different positions, hard to reach places, buttwelds, filletwelds, If things aren't working out, stop and ask for help. Repairing your fuck-up will cost a lot of time. Find someone who is willing to teach you. I enjoy having a trainee with me, if hes eager to learn.

You only like having a trainee with you so you can kick back and get drunk as fuck while he does all of the work, I worked at a boat yard too buddy.

Visit welding forums. This is not one.

Weldingweb, the Miller forums, the Hobart forums, and Rig Welder Forums are excellent resources.

Learn what the job requires, and invest in comfortable boots and socks.

Watch your tools. Shit gets stolen at many jobsites. Etch your mark of some kind on the tools or mark with paint, but ask first how the pros mark theirs because welding culture has specific ways of doing things. You'll get what I mean after a while.

RESPECT THE ANGLE GRINDER. ALL THE TIME. They will fuck up the inattentive in a heartbeat.

Ear protection, eye protection and other PPE exist for good reason. Use properly from the start.

I want to upgrade to auto tint lenses, preferably in goggle format, what's some non Chinese trash to look for and compare?
>>

I bought a Jackson fixed shade hood when I first started welding. Jackson hoods are cool because you can swap the shades in the original hood with different auto darkening modules.

So I can switch between fixed and auto darkening, and if I wanted to I can switch to a real high end module with all the bells and whistles.

damn you´re on to me.

Those videos are gold.60 years later and those are still some of the best arc shots on the internet.
Really makes you think.
