So, it's about time for me to update my PC hardware again, and I thought it might be cool to try building my own custom case. I wanted to do something like pic related. Nice flat form factor with plenty of room for expansion. It can be hung on the wall so it's not in the way. and plenty of airflow to keep it cool.

The overall design seems simple enough. It looks like it's basically just a wooden back board with some holes, and a couple risers holding up some plexiglass/acrilic. The thing I'm unsure about is how exactly to mount the hardware in the case.

If anyone has any ideas or experience with this type of thing, I'd love to hear it.

>all I/O connections inside case
>using the stock air cooler
>no fans for wind tunnel to keep it cooler
>didnt even run any of the wires yet
>no room for video card
>using slower western digital reds just because they say red on them
>red LEDs for maximum heat

That's going to be a dust magnet.
>>
That case is fucking dumb.
>form over function
>literally no airflow
>even bigger than a full tower case

Maybe, but I do't imagine it would be much worse than my current PC where I have it sitting on the floor. But even if I use an enclosed design, that doesn't solve my problem of how to actually securely mount everything. I kinda don't trust those little machine screws to hold very well in wood, and I don't want to use wood screws around delicate electronics.

You guys think it would be easiest to just dig around thrift stores for old PCs and chop the case up into mounting brackets?

hi anon,

you can do this with captive nuts or female-female standoffs (alternately coupling nuts, they are the same thing but with flats on the shaft)

with FFs, use another screw from the opposite side through a thru-hole in your wood/whatever backing. Washer on that side if you're worried about it pulling through. ( http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-threaded-standoffs/ )

drilling all the holes for a motherboard would be fucking insane. They actually have pretty tight tolerances.

That's a pretty good idea actually. I was originally thinking using a whole mess of screws, standoffs, washers, and nuts, but I didn't want that much hardware used for each and every mounting point (too many points of failure).

>>988655
not as tight as you might think. I had a twisted/warped case I bent back into shape once. some of the screw holes didn't quite line up, but you can easily work with a 1/16-1/32 margin of error for each screw hole on MBs. It'd be far more important to line up the holes for the harddrives and powersupply, since they have threaded screw holes to mount with, as opposed to MBs which just have holes with a bit of wiggle room. Still tho, shouldn't be too hard for anyone who carefully measures.

Another cool idea for a case would be.

Nose cone from an aircraft. Or rocket.
Custom aluminum shape think airstream RV. Or my personal favourite.... 18inch deck shell casing

Just think outside the box. Be hipster for a day.

Wow, the cable management is so good that they're invisible.

im also pretty interested in next upgrade being a heavily modded box and going watercooling not a fan of most of the shelf cases so been playing with a ton of ideas but one thing i need to find is PCIe extensions like in >>988719 but wanting something named for warranty reasons

Are you going to use intel(r) graphics inside(tm)?

Well, I understand that was built just to be a media PC, so... yeah, that's probably exactly what he's going to use. But who cares about hardware, this thread is about cases. Post more /diy/ cases/ideas.

Back in 2011 i retrofitted my PC into a 20 year old AT case. worked fine, but I threw it out because it was too heavy to carry around to LAN parties
