Silicone is a very good choice for plastics. Look for silicone grease in any electronics store.

prolly won't help OP but anyway:

the best lube to use for plastic is powdered teflon
a place online named Spurlock Tools sells big jars of it fairly cheap (don't buy the tiny tubes for $$$)

I use teflon grease. It is a white stuff, mine was originally made for bicycle chains. Vaseline is a petrochemical product, it might cause the plastic to swell.
