quick question anyone know how to check capacitors? already looked into it and found out about esr meters
>pic related
but from there on everything just looks so old its like some abandoned corner of the web or chinese
any suggestions on a good esr meter or a better method to test if a caps failing or not.
>>
esr is just a characteristic of capacitors, so the number by itself tells you nothing unless you have documented ratings (or brand new caps) to compare with. typically neither is available to you, unless you bought the caps yourself from a reputable supplier.

as for testing ESR, there are youtube videos showing how to do it with a scope and function generator, if you have those.

There are /diy arduino RLC checkers I think you'll be able to find one for yourself easily..

just get one of these $20 everything-testers and you'll be fine

not op, i was thinking of getting one of these. are they good enough?
though i didn't know about esr not telling you anything on its own as >>960682 said...

Use a multimeter dumb dumb.

Most mutlimeters don't measure capacitor ESR. It's not as simple as just using the resistance setting.

With a dmm on resistance, you can watch it bounce to infinite. This is easier on analog, but I find is workable on my digital. If the resistance stays low or doesn't give me any response, then there's a red flag.

You can use a scope, generator, and some math.
