What are some good materials I can use to insulate heat from standard metal vise jaws that won't melt or burn from very high temperatures, but will hold up under clamping pressure? This is to prevent the entire vise from acting as a giant heatsink when heating parts with a torch.
Ideally, it would be an insulator with the ability to hold up under temperature like ceramic, but can yield under pressure and is tough, like rubber. Basically, is there such thing as rubber that won't burn?
wood combusts at around 500-700 deg F and presumably more if wet.

You mean like high temperature silicone?
>ceramic
>heat insulator

There's a reason why they make coffee mugs out of ceramic instead of aluminum, doofus.

Some of the best heat conductors know to man are ceramics actually.

Wrap the part in a wet rag, and the vice jaws also if needed.
