If it's custom, why limit yourself? Who says you need to do what everyone else has done? Make it to your size requirements and forget limits.

Star Wars fansclubs (501st Legion and R2-D2 Builders Club) are positively anal. If you have any intention of bringing your costume or robot to any of their events, it's got to be built to their specifications and pass their inspection.

A little pro-tip to help you out on this bit of information.

Add a pizza tray ontop, a beer cooler on the inside, and a hot girl to stand next to it. all levels of the nerds will fuck off about your crappy built R2-D2.

OP here

as someone with backgrounds in machining and other such things i should be ok but i want the base size to be movie accurate and i kind of dumb when it comes to guessing that sort of thing

op this is my plan of attack on my build. since i have the body and the head, i now need to approximate the legs in relation to the body. this is the diagram i was intending to use. since I'm limited to scrounging for parts I'm not sure I'm going to get exactly the dimensions. i might post my progress

Plastic coating custom built foam parts is what is inspiring me for droid building.

XRobots - How To plastic coat foam & expanded pol…: http://youtu.be/MDwQg6CX25A

Hot wire cutters are easy to make.
Carve it out with easy to get tools (exacto, generic rotary tool, rasps, sandpaper) disposable buckets and paint brushes for epoxy.
Easy to reenforce (tent poles/fiber glass) but tough by itself.
Use spray foam like bondo, filling gaps and smoothing the skin.
No molds or casting needed = low space / cost needed.
Light weight = less motor strain = cheaper motors and longer battery life.
Paper craft plans work on sheet foam.
Easy to 3d print small detail parts on cheap/small machine and epoxy on for those that can into sculpting.

The real diy challenge is a better interface than a rc joystick. Voice operated tricks, following luggage system with sensor in a key FOB and laser pointer line following direct control ("go over to that spot", "chase the dot") All built into one of those pill bottle looking communicators.

>>947369
I can dig it. Your mech skills will come in useful, there is still a few things on mine I'm stuck on. Godspeed.

>>947391
R2? Or R4? Because no on ever does R4's, which is why I >>947291 went with them instead. Go with the R4 anon.

> a desk top thing.
Exactly what I'm making, 30cm tall. How are you planning on actuating your legs?

..

Actually, while I'm here, making the mechanism to actuate the legs at this smaller scale has been the hardest part, but I have a workable solution I need to build and crash test to see if it'll hold up. How do the droidfags typically actuate the legs? Linear actuators and a bell crank or something?

> could care less

FFFF.. couldn't care less.. sorry for the double post, but that is one of my triggers.
>>
>>947904
I'm going for an R4. i wanted something different then an R2 unit.

as for the legs i'm deciding on whether i want the 3 or just the 2 as they will be welded on and won't be actuating at all. I'm thinking about making the body the holder for a phone charger and a butane lighter as well as some LED lights. since this is my first I'm going to concentrate on the body first.

i just found some parts for the legs today. i'll take pics of what i have assembled so far and post maybe tomoro.

shit i meant R5.
