Anyone know a good website/book filled with reasonably simple wind up clockwork projects?

I really love the idea of things that move without batteries. It's something I'd like to get really creative with.

i have the urge to make soulless automatons that crawl across my desk.... how would i go about making gears and such along with i don't know a reasonably sized drill press to drill out holes and forming frames for them...

large gears you can cut out from templates, small gears pretty much have to be made on a watch making lathe.Honestly, your best bet is just to buy them from aliexpress.

For anything more interesting than just gears, linkages are pretty great and easy to make. They are just difficult to design.

Oh and don't even attempt cams, they are a lot harder to design and make than they look.

well i got a bunch of time on my hands and not a lot of cash. and i kinda want to make the gears myself

Well i found this...
is it shit?

then you won't be able to afford watch making equipment.

Making your own gears can be pretty insane:

You can buy a fuckload of whatever kind of gear from aliexpress for like a couple bucks. So CAD up what you're gonna make, figure out what you need to buy, and make it.

Start out by making larger clocks. You have more material options (even wood) and the larger pieces are easier to make without specialized tools*. Then work your way down to smaller mechanisms. That's how John Harrison started out.

*The Antikythera mechanism was made entirely by hand. No lathes or mills and only basic layout tools in 200 BC.

You should make this first

You can if you want to make a really long time just making gears, or you can buy all the gears you need from china for a couple bucks so you can focus on making your wind up automaton.

It's still gonna take some work to fabricate automata.

Also, you can make quite complicated small mechanisms from linkages with minimal tooling. With a small hobby saw you can cut lexan sheets from templates, use a center punch to mark your holes on the template, and drill holes out using a drill press. You use prescision shaft from with brass washers and shaft retainers for the joints.

This isn't really wind-up, but here's a dude's huge blog filled with material out the ass on making wooden pendulum clocks (as well as some other automata stuff as well). Shit's rad.
