Leatherman wave has saved me way to many times.

Other than that lathe or band saw.

I love my porter cable 18v nicad power drill. Had it for 5 years and its still going strong. I use the shit out of it too, been through 3 batteries.

If it can't be fixed with my Leatherman, it stays broken.

I never thought I'd use it as much as I do when I bought it.

Close second would be my miter saw

Are digital callipers more accurate and precise than Vernier callipers?
>>
>>1233908
They're easier to read. Precision comes down to how well they're made and calibrated.
>>
>>1233908
If you are worried about precision beyond a thousandth, you should be using a better measurement tool than calipers

This folding workbench. It's light, sets up in seconds, and is very sturdy. Way better than the old black and decker foldables.

Depends on which ones you are talking about. The steel ones are crap and heavy as hell. The original aluminum ones are fucking awesome. Light, rust free, and rock solid.

With those plastic ones I'd be concerned with how they hold up in the sun over time. Many plastics become brittle or even warp.

Only if they're made to be. Digital are easier to read, though, and the zeroing function makes differential measurements trivial. Downside: Batteries.

Why the fuck has nobody made a solar-powered calipers? I know they're usually stored in a drawer which limits the usefulness of that, but still...
>>
>>1235615
Those solar calculators work just fine off ambient light when in use, I don't see why not. Unless the optical(?) measurement system uses too much power, which I doubt because they all run off coin cells.
>>
>>1235615
they do

At that price, I wonder if it recharges the battery with the panel? Or would the charging circuitry itself require too high a quiescent current?
>>

>Solar-powered cell that can be used continuously above 60 lux ambient illumination
No battery, just power efficiency. You don't need a lot of power to run a small microcircuit clocked at a few hundred kilohertz, read capacitive switches, and drive a small LCD. At that price, it remembers its origin point without power, forever.

>Floor with 2"x 5" holes.

wat?
>>
>>1235869
Oh, so it has a 32 bit flash memory in it? 16 for the value and 16 for the tare, I guess.
>>
>>1235932
It is possible to encode just a single strip of capacitive material with absolute position information (see Don Lancaster's work on the subject), so to save the last position may not even be necessary. Then, just the origin, for 16 bits of EEPROM, assuming that the little solar cell and the micro have enough oomph to build up a charge to write them.
>>
>>1233623
Hard to choose. I can pick my least faves, but fave is hard. Possibly a lathe? Probably a lathe.
>>
>>1235938
Reminds me of an NVRAM which required only a 100µF external capacitor to store all the 64kbit of RAM data to the shadow EEPROM in case of power loss.
