I want to get into blacksmithing, anyone got any links or advice on how to set up a basic forge cheaply?
I plan on using a charcoal forge because I want to try making my own charcoal as well. I have assess to a few archers of woodland so I'll have plenty of wood to use

Pic related was my first forge-type thingy. I took a 2 gallon paintcan type thing (found it outside a lab at university), cut a section out of the side, cut a hole in the top, drilled some holes in the side of a pipe, slide that in through the hole, then packed perlite around it, then covered that in perlite/refractory cement, then covered that in refractory cement. Dried it, fired it, then I mostly used it for very inprecise heat treaments.

Oh and it's blown by a hairdryer on "cool" setting

Op,you can also use a section of railroad track as a beginner anvil.

Get a large steel pipe, some kaowool, and fire brick. You should be able to make a propane forge for under $200 if you procure the materials correctly. It's easier to manage than charcoal and can give you more consistent temperature. Charcoal tends to throw off lots of embers too so it's easy to set small accidental fires or get small burns. Either use coal, or gas. Charcoal is ok to start but is not a good fuel for full time use.

Forgot to mention, you can also run them off of grill tanks, which makes fuel easy to procure and operate. There are fancier setups but to be honest as long as you can get to welding temps you won't need them.

You probably shouldn't have exposed kaowool like that
From what I've read, the stuff becomes brittle after enough heat cycles and the fibers aerate
It might not be asbestos but none of these artificial fibrous materials are good for your lungs
Generally people seem to paint over it with a layer of refractory cement, but I haven't tried mine yet

Thanks, and you're right, if you noticed, the hole for the burner isn't finished, need a new hole saw. Once it's done, I'll line the inside, but I'm not sure how to do it.

Brake rotor forge on google anon.
Reil style burners are cheap if propane.
Good luck! Show us what u make!

My forge is an ATV wheel (deeper than the more common brake drum DIY forges but unfortunately more narrow) with some black iron pipe fitted beneath for the air source/ash chute. I built the firepot inside the wheel out of fireclay and ash. It works pretty well with hardwood, charcoal, or coal for fuel, but it's mainly a coal forge since I can go mine it for free. If you can go dig yourself some clay somewhere, you have a ton of options for making forges for next-to-zero cost.
