The cheapo eclipse glasses apparently have expiration dates, I believe it's 3 years? it may have to due with the amount of light exposure?
Do welding lenses loose effectiveness over time? does it depend on how often they're used?
I'd be looking to order some in the future, in advance of the next eclipse....and maybe extra to flip

If they are glass they won't lose effectiveness. If they are plastic or polycarbonate or are coated, then most likely
Also you have to protect either one from damage from like scratches, etc..
The next solar eclipse is in 2024 and will be like in the eastern part of the US

I'm hoping to make a short trip to get closer to the path...day into very slightly less bright day is not nearly as interesting as day into night
I don't plan on actually using the lenses for anything else (welding), so keeping them clean shouldn't be a problem
sure, I could just get a pair of paper glasses before the next one, but if I'm going to put out a couple bucks anyway, I might as well get something a bit sturdier/versatile for making a ghetto helmet and or snapping some photos

They call that a neutral density filter. Available at almost any camera shop.
