To be dark enough, you'd have to be almost unable to see anything through them on a sunny day.

I did it lads. I used sunglasses on top of it until I couldn't see through it and put an eyepatch over my good eye. I looked and turned away at the same rate I would normal sun. So at least I should have one good eye left. I looked at the an eclipse once before when it was cloudy and was fine. It was cloudy today

My nig rig has two sets of tinted/polarized 99.8% UVA/UVB blocker sunglasses on top of each other, each side of the glass peices blocked out with magic marker, and then a layer of selephane on top for an extra layer of magic marker

So in total two pairs of sunglasses and five layers of black magic marker.

They work great actually. Can stare right at the sun with them with no problem. It's a bit blurry, but where I am in NYS I can clearly look up and see a piece of the sun blotted out, so it's better than not having anything and certainly better than shelling out $300

Still only gonna look in fits and bursts and limit my direct exposure, just to be careful.
