Sup /diy/

I just paid cash for a little piece of mountain land, with the intention of building a small (600-1000ft2) cabin to use as my summer residence once I hit my FI goals.

I've been reading a lot about these kit cabins and they seem like a pretty cost effective way of putting a cabin up if you buy a quality design from a reputable company. Opinions on these? Any suggestions for manufacturers or advice you can provide?

Is a kit even the best way to go about building something nice on this land while keeping my costs down? I'm not looking for meme tier trash dwellings, I want to build something well that's super comfy and will last for a long, long time but as cost effectively as possible.

There's grid power just a few lots down the road, and I can have hookups installed right on the property by the power company pretty reasonably. The water table is pretty shallow and it will only cost a few thousand to have a good well put in. So, I'm in good shape on the fundamentals.

The big one is actually building the cabin. I'm pretty handy in general, but all my DIY experience is with electronics, machines, and plumbing from pet projects and working as an oilfield mechanic / roustabout. I know my way around all your common woodworking tools and I've hung some sheet rock and shit, but I have no real construction experience.

Any advice would be appreciated. Pic related.

Also,

Cabin building general I suppose.

Free time, a strong work ethic, some tools, and some money are all you really need.

A shipping container will be worthwhile to store equipment, tools, and materials (wouldn't recommend it for living quarters). These cabin 'kits' are all dropped off at once (usually precut, pre-marked wood) that you need to keep dry for whenever you get around to it. Tarps are worthless and the wood is bendy enough, why add more heat/moisture cycles to it.

You'll need a truck, probably a skid steer w/ a forklift attachment, a ratcheting hoist for lifting shit, and it would help to make friends with people who already know how to build houses and operate heavy equipment.

First check with your local building dept, many exemptions exist for owner-builders. Less regulation in rural areas.

Then figure out drainage, where the poop will go + inspected, and prep the site. Post/Beam foundation is the easiest to DIY, as you can manhandle a 16ft beam and pour a 36inch wide pit of concrete singlehanded vs trying to do concrete form work yourself. Look into http://fab-form.com/fast-tube/fast-tubeOverview.php vs sonotubes. Cheaper, easier to erect/cut and doesn't get fucked up by rain.

For resources, just find out what your state requires for residential contracting and read the books the state bases their test off of. Literally everything you need to know about building a house. You can find older copies of the books on ebay for cheap since they have a racket on requiring new books even though nothing has changed often times.

Else, look into the 'country plans' forum at other peoples build logs.

Get out of my state.

why don't you install a shipping container, insulate the exterior with hay bales (youtube) and install a DIY "guerilla septic" system (youtube)
>>
Multiple shipping container anon here who recommends doing it this way:

Place a 40-foot High Cube (preferably a "one trip" but at least "cargo ready" so you don't have to fuck with it) on two railroad ties. The corner fittings support the container.

That becomes your instant workshop. Have a "mobile home" power pole placed next to that with a panel, breakers and outdoor 120 and 240 outlets. Now you have power to build your house. It's easy to run power from that panel to a subpanel in the container.

I'd use that as a cabin too since I sleep in a hammock at home. Clip hammock to tiedown loops in container, done.

An outhouse will do for first shitter, and you can build that near enough to your container to run a shit pipe from a toilet in the container underground to the outhouse. Invisible and you will never fill up an outhouse pit with one or two humans worth of turds. My bro did his house that way.

You need to price a water well or truck in water while using a cistern to catch rain. That well will not be cheap. Check on that first.
>>
Ignore retards who tell you that you can't do it. If someone lays a floor, piecing together small cabin walls and little trusses is a piece of cake.
>>
If you really don't know what you're doing, you can save some time by buying a pre built shed and then finishing the inside however you want.

Your main issues will be water, electric, and HVAC
