What is the best free circuit/PCB design software? >pic unrelated

I used EAGLE PCB when I was in school, worked well enough.

ExpressPCB is cheap and simple.
Not so awesome if you need crazy-ass designs, but for the majority of basic prototype-level designs it works great.
Boards are cheap and good quality with fast shipping.

Most of US -> Eagle CAD
Most of EU -> Altium Design
If you want to get employed in electronics you should consider that.

I have done actual useful work with the GNU gEDA suite.

CERN picked up KiCad and started really pushing the development. At this point, I would say you're better off with KiCad than you would be with EAGLE, especially considering that KiCad's symbol/footprint library system is light years ahead of EAGLE's and really cuts back on footprints being reinvented every time you Google for them.
