The pitting was present in the casting before the buffing work. The wax I used wasn't 100% hot when I made the positive so some bubbles formed.

Nice! Now cast it in silver and I'll buy 10.

You can't cast silver this way. You need a spinning centrifuge. Also you need to flux/degas your aluminum more to make it smoother casting.
