I like wood glue + sawdust. It does take a lot of sanding to get the surrounding areas completely free of glue residue though (if using a clear finish where that matters).

I've heard of that mix before.

But only as a primer when painting pourus materials like plywood.

wood glue cleans up easy with acetone
