Recently moved a bookcase and noticed a large area (~1' x 2') of black mold underneath on the top of the carpet. The surface isn't damp now so it must have been a water leak that came and went. How can I cheaply and effectively remove both the mold and the stain, without replacing the carpet or ripping it out? Are there any good mold stain removal products I can make or buy at the store? Thanks.

Pic related is what it looks like.

nope

tons of bleach maybe, might be better to make it look bleached rather than moldy

or you could spray Great Stuff foam over it, which has anti-microbial agents, then dissolve the foam and hopefully the mold with acetone.

nope

you're screwed

What about hydrogen peroxide? I heard that works. And yeah I guess my biggest concern right now is just eliminating the mold on the surface and covering it up neatly until I can tackle it on a large-scale later.

Viniger works great to kill black mold.
U can find gallon jugs in cleaning section of the big box stores

Buy Concrobrium spray at a hardware store. Kills mold, leaves a mold killing residue. Do not mix with or spray after bleach-As directions on bottle say. Spray. Wait . Wipe. Good stuff when I used it.

Yeah, just hit it with some Great Stuff foam then dissolve it with acetone + vacuum the residue out

Pull that up first, make sure there's no live mold underneath.

Pro advice here. Don't forget to buy Great Stuff Stain Remover. Depending on the dye used in the carpet, you may need it.

OP here, I alternately applied a combination of hydroxen peroxide, concrobium mold control, and mold armor, and that seemed to do the trick pretty well. The mold stains are practically gone and the mold itself I think is killed.

I feel like the guy trying to tell me to apply great foam and acetone is trolling, since people in different places are complaining about the difficulty of removing the foam from carpets.

semi trolling. He was giving you advice that would result in the correct option, which was to rip out the rotted carpet.
carpet is supposed to be replaced every 5-7 years regardless.

>carpet is supposed to be replaced every 5-7 years regardless

This isn't /b/ quit bullshitting.

Carpet should be professionally cleaned every 3 years. If you manage this along with weekly cleaning. Your carpet should last easily 20 years.

A knife.

You don't have to replace it and you won't be tearing it out.
