Found this in my grandmothers basement after doing some work for her. Said I could take it.
Craftsman motor on the back, looks original.
Little bit of research indicates it's from the 30-40's.
Still works great. Haven't checked the runout on the spindle but it's putting holes through half inch mild steel that look pretty true.
Any knowledge from /diy/?

looks like a drill. this one looks a bit heavy and cumbersome to hold so probably put it on a table or 'bench' (technical term for table).
if you plug it in the bit at the front should spin around. pull on the handles to make the spinning bit go up and down.
used for making holes, the bit at the very bottom of the spinner can be swapped to make different sized holes but you need a special key.

you got a winner

;)
Serial plate, model 1-944. Can't date it though.
>>1220074
doesn't have a contact email on it anywhere for customer services?
>>1220085
I think it is hidden in a qr code. Try scanning all over it for the qr, sometimes its not super obvious that it's a qr.
>>1220074
Either your grandma enjoys editing Wikipedia or that's not an actual serial number but a model number.

tbf to OP, deapsite EXACT SAME pegboard background etc., the yet-another-other one in Wikipedia also looks like its 1/944 stamped, and OPs appears to be missing bottom ID plate screw etc. Maybe Walker-Turner just couldn't into serial numbers, must have been fuck confusing tho.

You my friend are about to fall down what we like to call "the slippery slope". There is no going back:

cool site. I bet they can tell OP anything he wants to know.
this seems a bit fucked though: " Please note, no Asian made machines may be discussed on any of the forums. "
What if my grandad snagged some cool machinery in post war japan?

Easy, you know where you can stick it

fair enough, I realize I'm on 4chan.

no problem bro, I can mingle on all levels.

Couple more OWWM I restored to operation

You will find the manual for your drill press on that site

Thanks for giving me a new place to troll the tits off 'em
triggered boomers are hilarious
>>1220196
haven't gotten around to this one yet.
>>1220197
Only they ain't boomers. The guys on that group hate Asians for more than just cheap knock-off machinery.
>>1220107
Noce. Just picked up its little brother for 3t bucks today. Fully operational
Uh.
What.
Did you post this, OP?

I have two of those 8 inchers in pieces in my barn. One has the original motor.
>>1220223
That is a different machine.
>>1220245
Whoops.
So it is.

That feed roller setup looks interesting...

Very old Boice-Crane, wonder how many fingers have been snicker snacked on

You lucky f'ing bastard...

Here's the shitty Chinese drill press I'm trying to make useful.
Got a better clamp and table on it now, so it doesn't flex while I'm drilling. (Pressure from the handle made the table flex or even rotate before)
Still need to replace the column (it's thin wall tubing, so thin it egg shapes from the set screws keeping the head from pulling off), and make the base heavier or make a new one.
Then comes the fun part, the spindle bearings, shaft, and motor pulleys. Motor is obviously too weak too.

Rate my DIY table?

I once paid $40 for an old 12 inch Craftsman mohawk drill press. Why invest so much time and money polishing that turd when you can buy better off of CL if you just keep a weather eye out? Picture related, from google.

no one uses craigslist in my area
>>1221621
+10 what did you use?
>>1221591
Many. Came from the Philly Navy yard. Has transmission for dual use. Wood and metal. Not sure it's Boice Crane unless they removed logos for military contract.

like 3/8 or 1/2 flat plate of hot rolled (it hasn't rusted yet, it might have actually been a low grade stainless), used a worn out bridgeport to fly-cut the top halfway flat (it still looks worse than most end-mill finishes)
1/2 slots (original had 5/8 just ain't too worried about it)
3/4 through-hole (two of them), one was a fucked up calculation, but it will work well if I want to drop a bolt into it to act as a stop.
the clamp part was a heavy rectangle of random shit I found in a junk pile, it looked like the end had been sheared off by god knows how much force, or maybe it was originally hammer forged. 3" by 6" by 2" probably
the two vertical "slots" on each side of the clamp near the through-hole act as a flexure, it was necessary because of the force required to squeeze that big block to lock it.
luckily 1/8" off each side near the hole loosened it up quite a bit.
3 flat-head screws hold the table to the clamp, clamp bar wasn't long enough for a different attachment method.
haven't made an attached handle to lock it down yet (still using a socket head cap screw), it doesn't rotate by design, the old table would rotate under normal use and tightening the bolt wouldn't stop it, was hot chink garbage (how often have you needed to rotate the table on a drill press?)
