Anyone else into pottery? I built a kiln a couple years ago and have finally got to use it this summer to fire some pottery I've made. Will dump pieces.

Easily one of the most ghetto things I've built. It's made of k-23(?) firebrick and special mortar to hold them all together. It's wrapped is your standard run of the mill fiberglass to hold in extra heat. The lid sits on a cushion of kaowool which acts as a gasket, which can withstand a lot more heat.

Thanks, absolutely agree with you. Right now I don't have enough space for a wheel or enough money to justify a membership to a studio unfortunately. Just trying to see what I can make by hand building. On top of the size constraints with my kiln, it turns out it's not a whole lot.

Inside of the kiln, approx 12"x12"x14" ish, can't remember the size of the blocks and don't feel like putting on a respirator to touch it. I had the heating element custom cut, it's kanthal which I've found to be a huge pain in the ass to cut by hand. It's rated at about 1400 W so it can be powered by a normal outlet without tripping the circuit breaker. I have it hooked up to an SSR and a PID controller which measures the temp through a thermocouple.

Incense holder. I'd love to make bowls and serving trays but right now the kiln is just way too small for anything like that. It takes about 8 hours from start to finish to fire pieces, so I'd rather do multiple small things and get to experiment more than one large piece and have it go wrong.

More wine stoppers. I can make loads of these a people seem to love them. To fire it I usually heat up the kiln to about 500 C with the lid cracked at a rate of about 100 C per half hour or 20 minutes, whichever I'm feeling. Then I shut the lid and ramp it up to 700 and then 1000 C, which usually takes a bit longer. Same procedure goes for glazing, although I turn it off a few degrees lower to prevent bubbling.

I've been experimenting with melted glass in trays but it's still a work in progress. I need to get them hotter and hold them there longer for the glass to really flow.

It maxes out close to 1850 F. Above that it gains a degree every couple of minutes. I'm sure if it was smaller with the same power setting, it could get much hotter. What else would you like to know? Do tell more about these foundries

Cool project. I really like that incense holder you made
>>
>>1218273
Thank you! It's fired at a lower temperature, called terra sigillata, you smooth over the clay with a plastic bag over your finger when its about leather hard. Leads to a really cool texture.
>>
wtf on the kiln. I was expecting wood fired, but that shit is cash. Look up smoke fired pottery and give it a try. I used to run kilns for a bunch of old women, if you can make good stuff (and it looks like you can) there's serious cash in it at craft shows. I Hauled their shit for them one time, didn't have but a small car load. They brought in 5k in one day at the show. Good luck and have fun.
>>
>>1218502
You mean you burnished the clay alone, or you applied terra sig, then burnished that? (terra sigillata in modern usage being the very thin, colloidal slip of micro-fine clay particles made by deflocculating a clay in water, letting it stratify and decanting the top layer off)
>>
>>1218591
I'm inclined to think the former because terra sig is usually applied on bone dry greenware.
>>
>>1218255
I've seen your floor slab, but show me your lid. Is it also made of k-23's? Not sure the blanket on the rim is doing you any good. I would mate the two ifb surfaces together as flat as possible, then cover the top and outside gaps with the blanket. Also, if you're running off a power cord longer than 10', shorten it, preferably to 5'. I see no reason you can't get to cone 6 in 2-3 hours otherwise.
>>
>>1218597
Actually, I'm looking at your terminals now. The one looks on there pretty tight, but the other one hanging off the strapping, does this come loose all the time? Is that aluminum wire? What? I feel like you're loosing heat juice at several points there.
>>

>>1218597
So the lid is just 3 k-23s wide mortared together. I throw a layer of kaowool and fiberglass on top of that for extra insulation since the lid seems to get the hottest. I never thought about shortening the power cord! It makes enough sense, it definitely gets pretty warm after 3+ hours. The more juice the better. How would I go about mating the lid and body surfaces? Sander and respirator?

>>1218602
Pic related, this has been the most fussy part about the thing. So the kanthal wiring leaves the kiln and juts out about a foot. Originally I'd wrap the extension cord wiring directly around the kanthal, but since the kanthal would get so hot the wiring would just oxidise and get brittle and fall off. My most recent solution has been to crimp copper tubing over the kanthal. to kind of act as a better contact and heat sink to prevent oxidation. The wires for whatever reason are a little askew leaving the kiln. Pic related. The silver is where I originally tried to solder the wires to the copper tubing, but it fell off.
>>
>>1218591
Sorry I was being quick with my wording. I have terra sig slip which I then burnished with a bag over the clay. The clay body has grog so it definitely takes extra layers to get smooth and I doubt would get that smooth without the terra sig.
>>
Seems like the thread to ask in, my daughter recieved a shitty little plastic potter's wheel for a gift. She was so excited to use it but its a total piece of shit. I'd like to build her something she could use for years and wondering what I should be looking for when googling all these diy wheels. Like what is most important parts that make it the most functional? I have a motor and relays from a 3000lb winch that I'll use to run it.

If your walls and lid are mortared fairly well, simply rubbing the lid back and forth gently over the lid ought to sand out any slight unevenness in the surfaces. The soft bricks are pretty soft. Just use a paintbrush and shopvac to clean up the dust.

I've got a little test kiln about the size of your kiln, and I've found I cannot get over 2000F if I use any extension cord, but if I plug the 5' wired cord directly into a 15 amp outlet, I can get to 2200F in 2 hours, and 2300F in about 4 hours.

Heat on the power supply cord is not helping you; it's going to speed up oxidation. I can't tell you if it's because of a poor connection, or just radiant heat, but the two things make each other worse. As you know, when the kanthal wire gets hot, it form a layer of oxidation.

Just buy a ceramic terminal block, then copy the hardware in this:
https://hotkilns.com/element-terminal-hardware-set-2-section-kiln

Look at all these pictures and you'll totally get it.

I think my favorite place to order from is Euclid's Elements. Not only are they usually cheaper, but their nerds seem good at talking to people like us building kooky shit.

>>1218856
You need at least a 1/3 hp DC motor with a variable speed controller. The best diy solution is to pull both of those things from an old treadmill. Then you have to figure out a belt drive system. It's not impossible, but it's a pain in the ass unless you have a burnt out old electric wheel to rob the wheelhead, axle, bearing, and pulleys from. Honestly, making a kickwheel or leach treadle wheel from internet plans is a more solid choice.

You can also keep an eye on craigslist, or the equivalent sites where ever you are for old electric pottery wheels for sale from which you can pull components.

My foundries are shit. Like 1200-1300 degrees F melts aluminum and brass.

Pretty much youtube sime backyard metal foundries anon, you'll probably get a kick out of it. Get some clay graphite crucibles and modify a lid with a gike so you can shove cans or other metal into.

Could easily make your kiln into a foundry also.
>>
>>1219348
I've looked over the website backyard metal casting, very interesting what you can do with some charcoal and a leaf blower.

>>1218858
I've have to look into getting that, although I was under the impression stainless steel was not very conductive?
>>
>>1219709
Yeah, but charcoal goes quick and is expensive. I had good luck with gas and deisle and waste oil.

But my refractory was plaster and sand. And my beard lost to the 10 foot fire tornadoe every single time.

Also, i learned that when deisle is hot enough to smoke white, it ignites like gas.

Things to consider. Lol

I would definitely suggest electric then, not sure about how quickly it gets up to temp compared to fire but it's definitely much easier than maintaining a fire and will definitely got hot enough for copper alloys even. I've thought about buying a crucible but I'm not sure what the thermal stress would do to the inner bricks for very long.
